Today was field day for my 12 year old son Travis, for his hunter safety course.

We arrived at COSA, The Central Oregon Shooting Range at 0745.
Beautiful morning at a great facility. This is not just your average gun range.
There are numerous setups for rifle and pistol shooting with one of the rifle sections going out to 1,000 yards, law enforcement area, cowboy shooting town, black powder range and trap area.

Anyway, When it was Travis' turn to shoot, his coach was a gentleman about 65 years young, very nice guy. After Trav fired his 10 shots, the ol boy asks if he wants his target ? Heck ya says Travis. So we head down range to check his score, he was pleasantly surprised to see that Trav already knew how to shoot and did quite well :D:D:D.

So he pulls out his knife to cut the target off. Yahoo... A nice specimen of an early Case 6292. So the conversation changes from shooting to knives..
As we get back to the bench I find another instructor, a guy about my age, late 40's with a Schrade 8OT. I was in great company today carrying my old Red Bone 6207..

Then we move on to the field walk. This instructor I find out makes sheath knives and recurve bows. I'm lovin this day..
So I ask him about his knives. He will make any design a person wants, and uses 1095 and ATS-34, as well as doing his own sheaths...
After talking to him, I'm going to go over to his house sometime and look at the knives and the bows..

All in all it was a great day. Had a lot of fun watching Travis and was very proud of the way he handled himself at the range. I guess all the time I have spent since he was very little, teaching him gun safety paid off..

I have found that a lot of the time guys that care about knives usually like guns too. You were in good company today, and so were they.

I was into guns before I was into knives. But now I have a lot more knives than guns. Sounds like you had a really neat day that only comes around once in a while.

as an avid hunter and fisherman I've found that both disciplines require knives. Just bust out your knife for some kind of use at the range and lay it on your bench and you can bet guys will notice and start a chit-chat about it. Range guys are always looking at other guys benches to see all the different toys lol.

I use to do a lot of shooting, handgun and rifle.
I had more fun today watching Travis and the other kids then I ever did before.
Its true that guys are always snooping benches checkin out the goodies.
I use to do that with other peoples targets too :D

A guy at my office is a ex gun smith. He asks me every monday if I have made a new fixed blade or bought another folder. He really gets exited when I use wood handles on a knife. Its cool to talk to someone that has similar interests as you do. I am working on a liner lock and will be gifting it to him, but he doesn't know it yet.

I love hearing stories like that. I had a similar experience at Babies-R-Us of all places. Kinda makes you feel like there's hope :)

It is always cool when you bump into someone who admires your knife and shows you theirs rather than a gawking look like you are a homicidal maniac.

To me it just goes hand in hand. Congradulations and thanks for doing that boy right:thumbup:! Happy Mother's Day to all our moms and especially those that let boys be boys!
