It's almost Christmas and that's when I make small knives. Here are some that I've been working on and you will notice I've been experimenting with kiridashis. I decided to give one forged copper highlights... and one is an art piece that is in progress. The little leaf shaped one on the display (also in progress, please ignore the broken nail) is forged from the shear steel I made at Ric Furrer's shop. It has been heavily plated with copper and I'm now patiently awaiting the green fuzz to grow. There are also a small hunter and Japanese utility knife made for a forum member here. The little hunter has an 1/8" spine of W2.

Happy Holiday Scott. Plethora means an abundance, an excess, which is the one thing we can't get looking at your work.
Love the copper stained ones, I've been playing with that for a while and mine just looks......nasty....or puddles up.... or slides off..
Outstanding 'dashis, will make some pocket very happy...........

Thanks folks...

Randy... Are you talking about forging your copper on or chemically plating it? I recently discovered using copper sulfate... Man does that put the copper on heavy. I've always wanted to see if i could get a greenish patina on a blade and i think it will work this time...although only suitable for a display piece.

As to forging copper accents... As long as your surfaces are clean and you have a good way hold the copper sheet on tight it's pretty easy. On this one, I actually used copper rivets to hold it down... Which left copper accents on the flat side too which look pretty cool. I'm really looking forward to start doing more finished 'tsuba-like' kiridashis with copper inlays and carving (I'm using an art development grant to learn some of this from Patrick Hastings at Tagane Arts).

Thanks Scott, I think my problem is it keeps wiggling around while forging, rivets sound like the ticket. Look forward to some of the inlays and carving. I slobber over Serge's work....I use copper sulfate on exposed fasteners on some of my exhibits. Love the look after about a year. If you can't hide them, accent them.....Those little 'dashi's are like a blank canvas just waiting for new stuff to be tried on them...Thanks for the inspiration....

Thanks a lot folks... Yeah Kevin.. Busy. Between a three year old, a one year old, knife making and hunting... not much sleep.

Randy... I agree that the dashi is a nice blank slate. I had started to get annoyed with them even though they are definitely a bread and butter aspect to my business... but I've started embracing them and I now realize how much can be done with such a simple concept if I learn some engraving and Japanese metal work techniques.
