A Pocket Contingency Kit

good read as always Brian. I wish I had the smaller maxped pouch

Maxpedition.com currently has these, and some similar ones, "buy one, get one free". I have, umm, "some" on the way.

Brian, that's a well thought out pack. I especially like the idea of the ripSPOOL. Pretty ingenious.

Good article Brian

Thanks Greg, I'm glad you liked it :)

Thanks Bob, I'm glad you enjoy them. Smaller which way? Smaller as in you have the larger one and like this one, or smaller as in you want the micro? I had a micro kit i made for myself years ago, but gave it the micro and s few items to a student as a prize when it became too small for my daily needs 10 years ago. Now that she is older, I want to save up the money for another micro case to put together for when I am working alone now that she is older and has her own social life and spends time elsewhere a lot of the time when I am out working. With all the new advances in equipment and gear since i started this kits, the smaller kits can be much more effective these days, so I'd also like to do an article on the micro kit as well. The next article is on a larger kit in a different style pack all together and slightly larger than the largest of the Maxped EDC cases. It was put together based both on logical needs in my work and some very dark thoughts in some very bad scenarios inspired by some of the insanity that has been 2020.

dito!

organization can be fun :)

Yes, and under high stress in adverse conditions can also be very helpful.

good read~

makes me wanna go through my kits and see what i "need" to adjust:)

Thank you Phillip, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think we all should reevaluate kits now and then. I guess I'm pretty lucky, in that with me having actually used mine so much with my daughter and grandson over the years of working with a kid in tow, I get to reevaluate my items for usefulness pretty often.

Thank you Joe, I'm glad you enjoyed the article. I noticed they had them on sale when I was verifying I kept the mini and not the micro. It has been a while. At one time I had built kits in all of them. I and several members of a survival think tank I used to belong to back in 2007-2010 experimented with a lot of things and then published our findings in two books. Discretion was very important in a lot of our studies because they were all based in the UK, I was the only American invited in. I love the ripSPOOL, I have 3 or 4 of them still and I have given them as gifts since Rob started ofering them. I have been a consultant for Exotac and have worked with Rob on a few projects since 2009. One of the reasons I love Rob and like working with him is that he is absolutely anal about the quality of gear Exotac produces. I field a ripSPOOL, a nanoSPARK in my kit every day, and a Ti nanoSTRIKER XL has lived on my keychain for years now and has participated in teaching a lot of firecraft workshops. All of my packs also have some of the TinderZip zipper pulls on them as well. I'll go into those in the next article.

I have a question guys. This time I experimented with the illustration images, and made some of them windowpane images. The goal was to put more illustration/information into the same amount of space as usual, to say more about a complex subject without using more words and expanding the read time. I was trying to make sure the image files were still large enough to be zoom-able on a phone and each section of the image still be clear. Dose this image formatting work out okay for you guys?

While not viewing them on one of those instruments of the devil that you mention (phone), they show up perfectly on my laptop.

Works good on my phone.

Cool. thanks Joe. Yes, I write these articles and edit the illustration images for them on a wide-screen monitors, and it looks fine on mine as well. I was just hoping it would be good for the hand-held folks as well and was curious how it works for those who usually read via their handheld devices because I know that's pretty common these days.

Personally I very seldom do anything with my phone other than communicate with other people. Via text, messengers, or responding to their posts on social media. The only other use is looking up venues to see their hours and locations.

Works good on my phone.

Thanks Greg, I was hoping it would work well on a phone. I am trying to limit most of my articles to being 5 or 6 minute reads, but still put a good amount of information in them.

Have you thought about a light like this to keep your hands and your mouth clear?

just received mine. now i need to load it.

Cool, share a pic when you do if you get the chance. We always build kits from our own perspective and daily uses, so I am always curious how other people prepare for their daily lives. I love opportunities to learn something knew.

Yes actually. I carried a Petzl E light in my kit for years. I think I picked it up back in 2009. I really like them and how they function, and especially the storage capsule. The one I had featured in a few of my articles in different venues over the years, like this one for the Fiddleback website back in 2015

I gave that one to a ladyfriend who was going through a very stressful time in her life, either in late 2018 or early 2019. I need to pick up another one, but thanks to local politicians my income is suffering at the moment. And I'd really like to find one not made in China, so as far as affordable goes I'm looking at Priceton Tec. They were one of the sponsors of a recent event I was involved with in the spring of 2019, and I like their lights. I don't know if they make a a capsulated one yet. I just reached out to them yesterday to see what they have available and i have gotten a response yet.

Country Comm or Maratac looks like they make some nice ones in the USA. I picked that Petzl based on it being small and easy to pack. Otherwise I know that the bag can get overstuffed.

I have the Country Comm dual AAA Ti light as my daily but it's pretty long to hold in your mouth.

Thanks for the tips, I'll look into those also.

That was the same reason I picked the Petzl 10 years ago. I love the concept. It also worked well for my not putting all eggs in one basket and appearing to have nothing of interest approaches to urbanized wanderings in my studies. I would put the light in one pocket, this kit in a cargo pocket, and distribute my gear over my person in other pockets.

I also always have a small single AAA light around my neck, even when I am asleep, that is another hold over from some harsh lessons learned in my childhood on the streets, and from working in the basements of corporate buildings during my construction days. When the power goes out 4 stories under ground that's true darkness lol. I've had this light for 10 years i guess too. I'd like to find a US made counterpart to it, or at least one made in an allied country. I like that AAA Ti light.

Is that your gentle way of saying that another pouch needs purchasing??

BTW, a SureFire 6P is not improved by going through a cloths wash cycle. The fewer questions about that, the better.

LOL, I don't know maybe. I think mostly it's about a mind set, and just looking at your possible obstacles in a winter in a year when some out their want to just keep ramping up the uncertainty and causes for concerns, and then putting together somethings to help mitigate as many of those as best you can however you can do it. I don't even know if the Cooper Expedition Gear bag I picked up in 2013 is even still available anymore, but I am sure there are other ways to approach the kit through maxpedition or someone else. I've even built modular small kits and stored them in a back pack as a grab and go thing for get home scenarios I've considered over the years of traveling regionally to work and play multiplied by the madness that has been 2020....and going into 2021. Mad Max was set in 2021...just sayin'
