A pointless knife.

Some of you might recall my relatively recent saga wherein I snapped the point off my SnG. I ground it into a sort of small screwdriver like tip rather than grinding a point back onto it. I figured that I rarely used the point of the knife so a more robust "flat" end would be better if I needed to do a small bit of prying or suchlike.

Well, I was wrong. today I discovered just how much I actually used the sharp pointy tip of my knife. Opening the wrapping on my new portable electric fence unit. Opening a bag of dog food. Scratching a line across a timber plank I wanted to saw in half and just sticking it into a piece of wood so I could easily grab it while I was doing something else. All of these, I discovered, are much more easily achieved with a nice sharp point.

Guess I'll have to get the Edgepro out and start grinding!

Live and learn!

ok im sorry to get off point just i didnt know they made portable electriv fences....thats weird...but then again so is all of us...i love sharp points sooooo useful...

I am reminded of the British study a few months back in which some "researchers", after interviewing a few chefs, decided that knives didnt need sharp points after all and that for the sake of "public safety" they should only sell knives without points.

I guess they just tear the bag of dog food open with their hands?

You know, that is one VERY good argument why Tantos are nice to have. You get the best of a few worlds. a flat screwdriver or chisel-like area, a nice point, but stout tip, and of course your primary edge.

I always stop and look at those safety rounded off knives i see, like the trainer or rescues and wonder if there is useful applications. I too have broken the tip off of a few knives and had thought it may be a useful shape, and although It makes for a decent screwdriver I missed the sharp point.

I have been looking at the Tantos and im drawn to them. They look very cool. How about some recomendations? CRKT kiss are inexpensive enough. Kershaw Blackout Tanto. and a ton of fixed ones that give me goose bumps, Cold Steel tantos etc.

You have lots of options, but the one I've been EDCing the most is a good, and cheap CRKT m16-12z. I only paid $25 for it.
.
after looking on eBay, you have CS Voyager which is very tough, but if I were willing to spend $40, I'd go with the griptilian Tanta (with Axis lock!)

I'm sure the tanto is an extremely useful blade shape but, I just don't like the look of them, the shape doesn't appeal to me at all. I'll probably get one some day anyway and discover what I've been missing all these years but not yet.
