I was just on a thread where I recommended a Spyderco Lum Tanto. Then I said to myself "Why the heck did I ever trade that?" Now I'm looking for another.

This happens to me quite often where I get the itch for something and sell or trade good stuff to scratch the itch. Later. I end up on the forums or Ebay looking for a few of what I traded off or sold.:footinmou

I have mixed feelings about it. I SHOULD be able to control my impulse buying and consider my sales and trades more carefully.
On the other hand, it IS just a hobby!:p Why CAN'T I just do what makes me happy at the time and feel free to change my mind later and head off in a new knife direction?

Just thinking out loud. (Well, sort of.)

I don't often regret trades even though I often miss the knives I trade, however I do often regret selling knives. Ussually I do it b/c of low funds, then once I get money again I am off to replace.:(

Hmmm. I agree with half that.

I also do it b/c of low funds sometimes or to pay for an emergency (Sadly, I know it has happened to you recently. :( Poor guy.) or because I get a little stressed when my credit card goes over my pre-determined spending budget. Hey, at least we all have that "Ace in the Hole" when we need it. Too bad knives don't sell for near what we buy them for unless they're customs.

On the other hand, isn't MISSING the same as REGRETTING? Am I wrong here?
I see them as the same thing. I'll replace a knife that I miss that I didn't even use just because I regret selling it.

If anything I'd venture to say that MISSING is a more powerful sadness than REGRETTING. Here's why.

I have a knife or two that are quite rare and valuable but I HARDLY EVER carry them. If they were gone I probably would miss them but I'd regret it for financial and collector's reasons.

On the other hand, I have knives that aren't worth much at all (SOG Autoclips or my SAK for example) that I carry and use all the time. If I got rid of them I'd MISS them because I got used to having and using them all the time.

I'd be MUCH more inclined to feel like I had to replace those that I got used to using and MISSED than I would to replacing a collector's knife that I hardly touched. It's an emotional thing and I think that you get more attached to the ones you used.

I used the word REGRET differently than you did. I regret selling the knives I just miss too.

I probably will almost never carry that Aluminum Mirage you just sold me, but I used to have one. I miss it and I regret selling it. I'm replacing it "just because".

Missing and regreting don't really have to be the same thing. (ex.) I traded a Mini Socom for a BM I wanted for a long time. I love the BM and wouldn't trade it for anything, however I do miss the MT somewhat. I don't regret the trade, just miss the old knife :)

i only REALLLY miss one knife, my Rinaldi Gambit with blue/black G10 in D2 with a sharskin covered concealex sheath.

WTF was i thinking:(

and lemme tell ya ive had LOTS of knives come and go (mostly striders i think like 20 by now!) but thats the only one i ever REALLY regretted selling, it was perfect!
****!!!

I regret trading-off my REKAT Sifu(s), my Spyderco Chinook(s), and selling my Gerber BMF...But that's life...:).

After I bought my first Strider Knives I regret buying everything else I have.
:p

I regret a lot more receiving a knife that I bought over the internet and realising, when I finally have the chance to hold it, that it's not really what I want.

Those are the first to go.

The only knives Ive ever regretted getting rid of were...

ones I bought while living in Wiesbaden Germany,
one red bone handled boker sidelock etched switchblade
one stag handeled boker sidelock switchblade
one synthetice jigged brown handled boker sidelock switchblade
one white puma hunter
one stag handeled herbertz
hunter
one wood handled herbertz hunter
three engraved linder nicker knives with etching
and stag handles
one herbertz nicker with stag slabs
one german military gravity knife
one German army pocket knife
one German trench knife

.....I have to stop!! before I get anymore sad over this!!!
:(

As a true, certified knife nut, I realize that trading stuff we love is part of the game to get new toys. It does'nt make the loss of our loved knives any easier, though. Case in point: I traded a SERE 2000 to my buddy Maurice a few months ago. This SERE was perfect; I mean perfect grinds, lockup, everything. I saw the knife a short time ago, and it almost made me cry. Mo has been carrying and scratching it up ever since. :) I miss that knife.

I traded a very beautiful knife (that I didn't carry much) for a knife that I've been carrying almost constantly since. (3 years ago!) But I sure do miss that first knife. I don't regret the trade, as the knife I got is my favorite EDC, but I've been trying to replace the first one this whole time, and still have yet to find it again.

Luckily, I just received a knife that I can eventually replace the scales on, and then I'll have my long-lost love! (BM 850 Pearl, BTW)

Other than that one knife, there haven't been any that I really missed that much. I've missed some for the first few weeks after a trade (my Sebenza for almost two months), but they are usually quickly forgotten, and rarely regretted.

I regret getting rid of lots of knives I've had in the past.., but not recently :)

I keep just about everything....

"Hunters seek what they [WANT].., Seekers hunt what they [NEED]"

I collect and am a full time maker.
Couldn't imagine selling or trading any of the customs I've purchased....and believe me the stock market freefall since 3-2000, could have caused me to want to sell some of them....almost...got a new broker instead.
Interesting about the ones I make....I get the satisfaction of making and then posessing them for a short while. The only thing better than keeping them is the kick you get out of having someone else wanting your knife enough to pay you good money for it...that is a pure adrenalin rush!
The factory knives (Benchmade, Spyerco, Buck, Gerber, Case) And semi-
factory (A.G, Russell, etc.) don't really want to sell them either..would regret any of the A.G. Russell folders if I had to sell any of them.

Stay Safe,

What a night to come across this thread!

I don't like parting with my knives. I'd rather give one away to family or friends than sell or trade them. Tonight I saw a great knife for sale, a custom I wanted for a long time. I mailed the seller and we agreed on the price. Great. The very next thread, another one I wanted! but he was willing to trade ... so one of my best knives ever will be on its way tomorrow in trade.

I don't think I am going to regret this! :) even though it would be nice to have, say, a three-story museum with the walls all lined with glass-fronted cabinets to store the knives I may own some day and will never use.
