A potentially new belt grinder combo?

Was visiting the local Sears store over lunch hour and happen to notice they now offer a 6" grinder station with VARIABLE SPEED control. yep, controls from 2000 rpm to 3450, neat little package for $80.00. Then I got to thinking. Why not put the "multi-tool belt grinder attachment (sold by Texas Knife) on this little puppy and then I've got a belt grinder, with platen, that has a variable speed. Total cost (80.00 + $150.00 = $230.00). I've already got the multi-tool belt grinder attached to a Craftsman grinder now and it's been working great for the past two years--except for variable speed desires. This combination could really work and expand the uses for the belt grinder by using that variable speed control! (I get excited easily)--sorry :D :D :D

That's great! I was wondering if there were any variable speed bench grinders out there. What's the HP? Wheel size? I understand the Multitool will work on 6" and 8" wheels. Do you know if the Multitool has a removable platen? Can you do slack belt contour sanding?

John,
The current motor on my 6" grinder is rated at one third hp. I really doubt that, but, don't be fooled by this rating, I've fed a lot of metal through this set up and the motor hasn't failed or bogged down. It does have a removable platen, but you don't need to remove it to do contour sanding.--Dan
