A Present - For Me!!

Here's an odd request, even for this place:

This Friday will mark 16 ½ years since my last cigarette. I usually note the passing of that day in July each year with a special present to myself – something really extravagant. In between, there's always been something I “must” have to mark that 6th month: a Surefire or something from Spyderco has filled the bill in past years. Along the line I also quit drinking, so that 30 year old bourbon from one year is only a fond memory. Very fond. But that's another story.

Anyway, life has been good this year and I am blessed because this time I really can't think of anything I “really” need. But I can't abandon this tradition. So, I turn to this forum – what better place than a bunch of confirmed gadgeteers? - to ask for suggestions.

I want to spend anywhere from $50 - $100.

So, what do I really, really need?

Ps: And NO, a Zippo is out of the question!!

That's a tough one. Perhaps a knife? Tools? Computer game? Tank of gas for a solo weekend trip? Car/truck accessory? Camera lens/filters/bag/etc.? Fancy TI calculator? Music? Books? DVD movies?

I just bought myself a bunch of wrenches, sockets, and a drawer organizer. Cost almost exactly $100.

A copy of "Monty Python's Holy Grail", and take yourself and a loved (or lusted) one to dinner.

Got an outdoor grill?
A new toy I like,a remote meat thermometer, perfect for winter time grilling.

Count up and count down timer, large LCD display, and temp seems very accurate so far.
It has user friendly controls and works great at about 30 feet through one ext. and one int.wall.

I have been enjoying some seriously good meals working my way through some outdoor cookbooks, some of them even cooked in the rain, and all from the comfort of my living room.

Maverick Redi-Chek model ET-72.
$39.95 at Bed Bath And Beyond.

Just make sure you sit in the no smoking section! :D

Congrats on quitting. I did the same a few years ago, and haven't been drinking much, either, although I still like to if the occasion is right.

You deserve a big pat on the back and I applaud you. There are so many choices too, what if you took inventory of what you have and I bet a good idea will come to you. Congratulations!:) :) :)

Yep,definitely congrats!
I tried this year, didn't smoke till noon on Jan. 1st,quit at midnight so I lasted all of 1/2 a day. :o
Gollnick's advice seems very sound.

Maybe a new Surefire light? :)

Edited, because I'm an idiot and thought I was posting to a different thread.

Since you are celebrating 16.5 years, you should stick with the 16.5 theme.

My suggestion is hereand it says 16.5 in a way that is a touch over the 100$ limit but what the heck, life is short.

Wow, thanks for the thought maury. This July will mark my tenth year since I quit. Never occured to me to give myself an anniversary incentive present. Since it's my tenth, it'll be simple though, I'll just have to find a 10" FB knife! :D

I wil go with Gollnik's suggestion -- althought living in NYC means that the sight of the check for dinner for 2 at the "best restaurant in town" would probably put me in the nearest ER! And that's expensive here too!!

Anyway, I figure $100 spent on me and Wife (of 20+ years)is as nice a present as I could want.

By the way, since a couple of you posted about quitting or trying to quit, here are 2 things that helped me:

First (and probably most important) Ya Gotta Want To Quit! REALLY WANT TO QUIT. There are no gimicks or toys that will MAKE you quit. The mind set going into is is yor most powerful helper.

Second: Reward Yourself! I started on my first full smoke-free day with a small item (don't really remember what, just soething for a couple of bucks). Then, at the end of the first week, there was a bigger reward.

My day was the 13th of the month, so EVERY 13th, I buy myself something. Maybe something small like an expensive candy bar. Or a book or CD. Or a steak instead of a hamburger for lunch.

With cigs in NYC currently over $6.00 a pack, I figure that next year I should have saved enuff for.......... hmmmmmmmmm......ahhhhhhhhh!!!!

Finally, if anyone really wants to quit and really wants my help, please feel free to e-mail me with any specific problems. I am no expert beyond my own experience, but if I can help you, it will be my great pleasure!!!!
