CHECK OUT PIC #11 IN THE ALBUM

A few weeks ago, it was samhell's birthday. He has been very kind to me, and an idea popped into my head for a birthday present for him. As some of you know, I have been working on making my "Magic Knot Knives" and the knife above is/was a failed MKK. I drilled some holes a wee bit close to the ricasso, and I had to ditch the knife. I had been using the blade, without handles and such, just as a toolbox knife. So, over the past few days I put a quick "utility" finish on the blade, put g-10 scales on the handle and used Rob Simonich's "gunner grip" technique to make a modern version of "same" (rayskin), and then wrapped the handle in a Japanese fashion, and included a turk's head knot to make it even purdier. This is actually just a test wrap. As it turns out, I need longer wrap material, and the turk's head knot is kinda nasty. But, I thought I'd scan a pic and torture samhell a bit. I'll re-wrap this monday or tuesday, and sharpen it. Then when I get around to it, I'll drop it in the mail :D

Happy Birthday samhell, ya old bastid! :p

Hey Karl, nice knife! I like the way it tapers to both ends from the center. I definitely think you should make more! If you have an Industrial Formulators distributor near you like maybe a specialty woodworking store, look for a product called S1. It is a two part epoxy just a wee bit thicker than water. Two coats of that and it will harden your wrap like a rock. And it has a nice satiny sheen to it.

Regards,

Hugh

Thanks Hugh! That taper was accidental, but I like it too! And I do think I'll make more. This was really fun to make.

By the way, I still have some questions for ya. I'll shoot you an e-mail very soon. Oh, will Devcon 2-ton like from House of Tools do an adequate job of coating the wrap? That is all I have on hand, that and superglue.

Off to Calgary I go for the day!

Hey there, Crazy glue will work but I find that the fumes more often than not leave an unsightly white residue on the wrap and on the underlay. Nowadays, the only time I use Cyanoacrylate is on the butt knot (as little as possible). Two ton will work but it depends on the look you want. I more or less use S1 exclusively, simply because the "look" of the braid is still left exposed. I have done a few where I have first hardened the wrap with S1 and then smeared 5-minute epoxy over the wrap. Doing this basically covers up the appearence of the braid and leaves a nice, consistent shiny surface. I've found that if I just want to harden the wrap, and don't want to go for the nice shiny surface, epoxy looks like crap because some parts will be all smooth and shiny and others will look like shoelace. If you are using epoxy, even 5 minute, let it sit for a full 24 hours to avoid finger prints!!!!

If you are coming in to Calgary, go to Black Forest Wood Company. They sell bulk Cyanoacrylate that is like water. Much better than the Crazy Glue brand. Talk to Ardvan, he's a nice guy and a knifemaker as well. Also, you might want to see if they have any S1 in stock (that's where I got mine).

Damn:D Thanks man! Totally sweet knife. I bet that gunner grip feels great under the rap. When are we gonna see some combat knives from ya?
Maybe something in a spear point?;) :p

Hello everyone!

Please check the link again (knife #11). I rewrapped the handle today (the other handle was just a test wrap) and I sharpened the knife. Thanks go to Mr. Buckand Steve Corkum, whose handle wrapping instructions have proved to be extremely useful!

Specs on the knife: 440-C, 1/8" thick, g-10 handle material textued in Simonuch Style (with permission), wrapped over with black wrap and superglued where the wraps meet. OAL is less than 8 inches. It was fun making it, and I sure hope to make more in the future. Thanks for looking!

Pretty cool Cray.
