A progress report on my DIY Heat treat oven.

I am in the process of converting a kiln that was given to me, all the elements were burnt to a crisp but the bricks were in
good condition. So, I decided to tear it apart and build myself a heat treating oven.

The dimension will be 9*9*18", will be powered by 220v. Still trying to figure out which heating elements to use. I would like to use just one length on wire. Not sure how many watts is standard for the size I'm building. I've seen a few commerically built ovens around the same volume (mine is around .84 cu/ft) running around 3000 watts or so, hitting close to 2350F, give or take...

Still have to buy some furnace mortar to build the door and seal the wall bricks together.

That's looking really good so far. I had a kiln I planned to do the same with, but ended up selling it... then the money went to the state of WA to pay quarterly taxes! But I digress. If you look over at bladesmith's forum board, in the tools and tool building forum, there is a lot of good oven building info, too.

If you get a 50' piece of 14 gauge Kanthol A1 you will have a 20 amp draw and be around 4400 watts depending on your true voltage which should be between 220 and 240. This would make it a fairly fast oven and give you good element life. I bought mine from Pelican wire. They don't list 14 gauge anymore, but may have it if called. Check out the some basics thread mentioned for more details.
