Out of the blue Sam asked me if I would accept an Opinel as a gift and showing of his appreciation. I felt humbled and Sam did not owe me a thing.

I got back just a few moments ago to a package and I cut it open to find an awesome hand written note and knife. These kinds of things overwhelm me in a good way. Life can be so dark but my friends I have made here always help to show bright lights of true kindness and selflessness.

Sam deserves a tremendous thank you for this.

I immediately went to work on thinking of a design. So far I have the following.

It's going to be some time but with spring weather in the midst I will be out in the woods working on this beauty. This kind of hobby is most peaceful to me and I can't thank Sam enough for giving me this opportunity.

Thank you to everyone for reading of the kindess of Sam (bf name avoidspam)

Nice.
Do they sell them with the unfinished handles for folks to do their customization on?

Very cool, Kevin you are very deserving and Sam my hat it off to you for sending it to him.

Have a great day,
Jeff

Very cool! Lots of wood to play with on that Opie, look forward to seeing what you come up with!
Awesome gesture Sam:thumbup:
Thanks for sharing Kevin

Yes! Do a search for "Opinel ebauche," and you'll see what's available.

Further image searching reveals some of the cra-zy results of others' work.

Thanks,I've seen modded opis, but thought they were from stock knives.
I love to put handles on fixed blades so these will be cheap fun right up my alley.

Can't wait to see this one's metamorphosis, Kevin!

Good on you. Sam. And a great idea!

Hurray, it arrived!

A little while back I'd been thinking how helpful it would be to have a thread showing how to carry out maintenance on your slipjoint, things like peening the pivot. Andi posted a link to a thread with both him and Kevin showing how to do exactly that. I felt it was the least I could do to send two good friends a little project by way of thanks:)

I've really enjoyed making mine (I've done three now, one for my wife, one as a work knife and one fancy one:)) and am looking forward to seeing theirs take shape. I also thought it might be a nice way to draw attention to Opi Ebauches.....

Thanks Kevin and Andi!

Awesome thread Kevin, and it goes to a hang-of-a great guy, so thank you Sam, that's a very kind thing you did there.
Heart warming reading.

Well, I also wanted to thank Sam. I got my Opinel-building-kit some time ago but I just wanted to show it off when the knife is finished.

It was really a great surprise for me when I opened the package. I almost made thoughts about how I could make it... but I gonna start when I have a little more time ;) I gonna make a thread about this as well, promised.

I´m really glad I could help, Sam :)

Have a nice weekend everyone.

I got out my sharpest knife that melts through hardwoods but I still had some problems with chipping so I'm doing rough shaping with sandpaper and files.

So far

I'm taking a break while I'm ahead :)

Looking good, like the crisp cutout:)

Thought I'd be cheeky and post some previous efforts:)

The last one was shortened to make it more pocket friendly. I also makes everything look a bit more in proportion.

Thanks Sam, yours are a great inspiration. As per our conversation I am going more for EDC design then fancy, ornate desk jewel :)

I knew it was going to be challenging to try to keep with the round design and have flats like I wanted. I would say I am 30 percent done here.

Who knows where it will go from here, but I like this knife and its a ton of fun.

A few ideas I worked towards looked so much better on paper.
