A "project" for Joe perhaps or anyone with the info?

I often wondered about some of the web specials buildouts. They appear to be assembled from left over parts of other knives such as those made for specific vendors. I for one would really like to know what some were originally destined for.

For instance the cool blade in the latest 500 buildout (A million thanks to Flatlander!). No nail nick, mirror polished ATS-34 blade and a Buck/Custom/USA stamp (no anvil). I have quite a few 500's in my stash and I've never seen that blade before. I'd really be interested to know what the blade was originally made for.

I could go on and on, the charcoal Dymondwood 110's with the 154CM blades, the 110 with the Buck/Custom/USA partially serrated ATS-34 blade, and so on.

What were all those unusual blades produced for?

Oh my gosh thats a great question and a great, as in large, project! :)
Maybe I can at least find out some of the more interesting ones such as that 500 ats-34 blade. I'd like to know that one myself.
You didnt ask about this one but I happen to know it off the top of my head so in the hopes of making myself appear smart:)...most of the 118 build outs with D2 steel are made of blades left over from the Family Favorites set we did back in 2002. Originally we were going to do 1000 of the sets which included one 118 in D2. Maybe it was the $3000 sugested retail price but we only actually sold less than 100 of the sets. We have been using up the left over blades and I think we may finally be out.
Hope this helps.

Well, if they're finally all out of D2, I feel pretty privileged to have scored two of those great 118s this time!!

Hope somebody runs across some other interesting blades in some dusty corner somewhere soon.

:)

Thanks Joe, I know that you have nothing better to do than this kind of stuff. :);)

Seriously, Thanks in advance for whatever else you come up with when you have the time.

The question about the 500 blade may have already been answered. Flatlander63 sent me a picture of a Limited Edition 500 with the same blade. Perhaps he will post the picture here or allow me to post it.

The D2 118 answer is going to send me searching through all my boxes for the one below to see what the box and coa (if it came with one) says about it. It may be another buildout, but I just don't recall.

I'm thinking that "In the beginning" the first D2 blades came out in the 2002 "Family Favorites" version of the 118......and I think only about 100 were made.

Then there was the "President's Tour" 2004 version 118 with D2 and I doubt they made many of those.

Since then there have been sporadic limited runs of D2 118s
.

:D

We sure got some nice working knives from the leftovers of that first "Family Favorite" thing.

If Joe thinks they intended on making 1000 of them......maybe that's how many total D2 blades were made.

So if they are all gone..... there would be about 800 of the various D2 118 offerings in existence?

Maybe?

My guess is the 500 ATS-34 blades were overruns of the Club knife blade Cat #4634, 500JBSCC-B from 2007.

That looks right, thank you. The one that Flatlander showed me though, has honey jigged bone handles with finger grips. It looks like the same blade also but I don't know what the model number is other than "500CC". There were 150 produced according to the COA.

I've also seen the D2 118 blade on some lucite handled specials and also as a partial chipped flint with a silver buffalo inlayed in the handle.
