I wanted to share some pictures of a new puukko I just bought. The puukkoseppa (bladesmith) is Joonas Kallioniemi. These are his images.

Silversteel blade, curly birch handle, nickel silver furniture. Like a lot of puukkoseppa he builds everything from scratch, including making the wood and leather sheath.

I hope to receive it within the next few days.

Can't imagine a more beautiful user puuko. Can we have details about where you got it from?

I got it direct from the maker. At the moment it is on a journey from Finland. The internet is a wondrous thing, ten years ago I wouldn't have had the slightest idea how to buy a knife from abroad. Now it is standard fare to correspond with a smith a continent away. We can now buy puukkos from Finland, gaucho knives from Argentina, khukuris from Nepal -- all with the click of a button.

That sure is a pretty knife!

The handle looks great.

I don't know I have seen an oval exposed tang like that on the rear rivet/fastener on that handle (assuming that is the tang).

It matches the handle shape nicely, and is visually more appealing than a round inside round attachment).

Big,

That is indeed the tang. The tang and the washer are countersunk with the handle and finished flush. It's a signature touch of Kallioniemi's.

Joonas has recently completed his Finnish Army service and is just now getting into knifemaking full-time. Incredibly he's only 22. I look forward to watching him develop as a smith.

This will be my new picture for what a "clean" knife should be. I love the artistic way he signed it, too.

After an interminable twelve days, my new puukko was delivered this afternoon. It's even better than I hoped for. Fit and finish is first rate, and the execution is impeccable. I've spent the past hour turning it over in my hands, examining it from every angle. I'm discovering little details here and there that testify that this knife was made by an expert craftsman. Things like the seamless handle-to-bolster transition or the hallmark of a forged blade, a full distal taper.

I think I've caught the virus. This is my first custom forged blade, and I now know firsthand what the fuss is all about. I don't think there's any going back.

Joonas totally epitomises everything I love about this style of puukko in his work.

It really has such elegant simplicity. I hope you enjoy using it....its certainly a pleasure to look at.

It definitely has that "CLEAN", well crafted look to it complimented by a superbly crafted sheath!

Certainly a beutifully designed and executed knife. Do you know the steel ? And how sharp is the edge on arrival ? able to easily pop arm hairs ?
It still surprises me how many experienced knifemakers, some of much esteem, seem unable to put a superior edge on the superior knife they have just made. It's as if knife making does not also impart a high level of blade sharpening ability.

Roland,

The steel is Böhler k510, AKA as silversteel. It's a pretty common blade material for handmade puukkos. According to Joonas, the composition is as follows: C 1.18% Si 0.25% Mn 0.30% Cr 0.70% V 0.10%. This is my first experience with silversteel.

No worries about sharpness with this knife. It is the sharpest I've ever received from a maker. Custom or production, fixed or folding, doesn't matter. This knife has now set my standard for sharpness. A little time with a strop and it was able to whittle one of my wife's hairs.

kg, well that is great and most satisfying for you to have both top notch beauty and top notch sharpness in a knife from a maker who is new to you.
Now i want one just like yours.
