I bought this recently and the seller was not sure as to the blade steel. Does anyone know what blade steel they used on this model? It appears to be a File & Wire according to the tang marking.
The seller was correct that the stag on this is REALLY nice!

No, it is a gunstock pattern and I posted both sides of the blade tang. One side say "Schatt & Morgan Cutlery Company Titusville, PA." The other side is "F&W" with a what appears to be QTC with the T elongated.

the tang itself sometimes doesnt tell, but they do etch it on the blade on most EDCs. Sometimes the EDC goes over it. but bigbiscuit's comment is best, id link a place that has it, but that one is in slightly different config long pull. so check your visitor messages in a few moments. that one is CPM 154

Thank you gentlemen very much. I looked at the websites you sent me and it could be either.

I just sharpened it on my Work Sharp and it took longer than I originally expected. It seems this is some abrasion resistant steel! I think I got myself a read winner for an EDC! Beautiful stag, a nice stainless blade steel by the looks of it, the blade is centered and the backspring is flush in all three positions.

I am one happy camper.

Thank you again gentlemen.

It used to be if it was ATS34 it was marked as such. It is a premium steel so it was marked. If it was not marked, it was 420HC or something similar. All but one of my ATS34 knives are marked as such. The one w/o the mark is 2000 toothpick and I was told by the dealer they made some mistakes that year but it was ATS34, however another dealer on the interweb said if it's not marked it ain't ATS34. If it had a "P" for Peter's Heat-treat on the tang it was D2, but I believe D2 was for Queen not S &M.

I have had a chance to both use and sharpen my new to me S&C. I still do not know what the blade steel is but it certainly acts like the D2 steel in my Queen knives. It doesn't take a fine edge like my 1095 stuff from GEC or the ATS 34 steel from Benchmade. I do not know how 420HC performs but the edge does not feel sharp but yet it cuts better than you would expect.
I sent an email to Queen knives with photos and I hope they can provide me with some information about this knife.

First off, it looks a great item with some very decent Stag.

Secondly, Queen has lately been sending out some knives with marked steel, some without. There was a recent discussion about this and it could be they are using up parts' knives leading to some chaos.... If your knife is hard to sharpen then it's very unlikely to be 420 more like ATS 34.

As I say, it looks grand and I hope you will enjoy it in use, cos that's what it's all about.

Thanks, Will

I recall Jeff once stating somewhere that File and Wire, being the premium series, were all ATS-34

I am expecting a stag S&M Gunstock File and Wire in the mail any day now. I ordered it from KSF. According to the KSF website, the steel is D2. There is also a bone S&M Gunstock File and Wire, and the site states the steel is ATS-34. So it seems that the stag knives get D2 and the bone get ATS-34. I am interpreting this correctly?

Good interpretation, and good learning for me! From a dealer's website:

That seems to support my experience with this blade steel so far. The fit and finish is first rate, the stag is really nice and the blade acts like the D2 blades of the couple Queen knives I have.
Unless Queen responds to my inquiry and tells me otherwise; I will assume it is D2 steel which is very good indeed.

very interesting, i believe i would loss a bet on ATS-34.
i have some Queen D2 steel bladed knives but have never used them. i would've just assumed F&W would be ATS-34.
thanks for sharing this info.

They did do two small releases in cpm-154, four covers, a single blade ands double ,pen secondary. They were pretty prominently marked though, unless it was stamped EDC. They certainly have D2 and Ats-34 models out right now. Kinda confusing, all taken with all.
Thanks, Neal
Ps really like the looks and thinking behind the cpm-154 models, fair prices too.

That looks like knifeworks, they are bf approved to mention. Good site actually.
