A question about Buck blade steel

I have an older Buck model 500 Duke that dates back to 1981. It is the micarta scaled handle with the gothic blade script. Was Buck still using 440C steel or had they already switch over to 420?

What year did Buck complete the switch to 425M actoss the board for all the knives made in-house?

Please forgive me, but I don't recall if Camillus was still producing the 300 series, or if the 300's were made in-house when the change to 425M happened.

Larry Oden wrote that the change to 425M for the 500 series started in 1982. For the 301, 303, 305, and 309 the switch from Camillus production to Buck started in 1985.

So some of the early Buck made 300 series had/has the 425M blade steel?

I thought they went straight from the Camillus 440A to Buck's 420HC. (won't be the first (or last) time I was/am in error.)

I didn't phrase that very well. For the steel I was talking about the 500 series, and for the 300 series I was talking about the start of Buck production. I think for the 300 series made by Buck it was 420HC, but I'm not sure.

Buck announced in their 1981 catalog, about a construction change for the 500 series. Which was, they went to birch inlay handles.
Then the change to 425m steel was in 1982 but no change to indicate this. Then in 84 or sometime in 85 Buck changed the stamp from
the old English script to a block lettered stamp. Thus, it's hard to say know which models have 425m steel. Thus, the inlays of birch would
become an indicator. DM
