My old Buck 311 trapper (my only Buck slipjoint, I might add) does not have a date symbol , as far as I can tell.
I received it on a birthday in 1977.
What year did Buck start to add date symbols to slipjoints?

Thanks for your patience
Ray

Buck began using year symbols in 1986. In 1972, Buck added model numbers so if your's is Buck, 311, USA if was produced between 72 and 77. I don't think we can get closer than that.

David, I'm not sure Flat intended it as a pun, but he stated the knife would have to be made sometime between 72 and 77 and the OP stated that he received it as birthday gift in 77 so it obviously couldn't have been made after that. At least that 's the way I see it.

Thanks Doc, I thought it was the 'Dating' talk.......

Let me tell the original poster and anyone else there is a 311 history on the BCCI website, if you are a member. Seveal folks are helping me with info and we will get more of those 300 histories done. I will go see if I copied the 311 info on this forum .......300

Apparently I didn't will work on that ......

The dating wording/thinking was the only stretch I could come up with as well. My Mother always told me; "don't drink, smoke or chew and don't date girls that do". DM

Well, on second thought, perhaps there is something to that "not being able to get closer than that" statement. ;)

If I missed something here because I scanned the responses in too big a hurry, please forgive me. However, I do not believe anyone pointed out that the model 311 (like several other Buck 300 series knives) was only made on contract by Camillus and Buck Knives NEVER produced this model. It can be found with a BUCK / MADE IN / U.S.A. tang stamp and later versions with a
BUCK / 311 / U.S.A. tang stamp. A few early, early editions exist with handle inlay rivets. Craig H. will attest to that, won't you, Craig?!

As has been mentioned, the BCCI website has archived articles on many, many Buck models and series. The 300 series is one of them.

Reveiw the title of Post, so it's not confused with an E-Harmony commercial.

Larry correct, and those who are BCCI members can go and see photos of all mentioned and some more.

300, I have two questions.
First, what kinda fish donated those filets?
Second, which knife helped him off load those tasty looking hunks of meat?

That seems accurate on both accounts. A nice catch of fish. The blood line gave the variety away... DM

Had these 309s out and can't waste not making a photo showing the tang stamps and eventual date codes. 300

Note I am missing the first version with scale rivets, whoa is me, and one with BUCK shield with no date code (85). Oh and 89. But do have the 1988 date code with both shields. 301s,303s and 305s have a version with BUCK shields for 88, guess the 309 was early to dinner and ended up with both. The bottom three are Camillus and the stamping process was off on at least one. The Buck made tang stamps were really consistant. <= 86, > = 87, ^ = 88, v = 89. To be honest this is my worst collection line......ebay warning be prepared to spend $$ to beat me if one come up.
