A question about exclusive Buck patterns.

Browsing through my knife photos, I realized that I have a couple of knives made by Buck for another vendor whose pattern seems to be exclusive to that vendor. As far as I can find out, Buck never used the patterns for any knife that they sold themself. I can come up with two and I was wondering if anyone knows of any others?

Here's the first that came to mind, the small skinner that was (is?) sold by Bass Pro Shops under the Red Head brand. There were three available, one wood handled, on with G10 and the Stag model. I've not seen any other variations of the pattern produced other than those three. I have the two below.

There is also a big ugly fixed blade that Buck produced overseas for the RMEF that seems to be an exclusive.

Does anyone know of any other exclusives?

There is the Buck/AG Russell 308 Canoe...which I beleive was a collaboration... (Buck sold some buildouts though)...

Thanks for reminding me of that one. I think it qualifies as an exclusive even though Buck sold them as buildouts. They weren't a standard pattern sold to anyone else that I'm aware of.

I beleive that they were designed by AGR and produced by Buck, AGR sold them in stag and black lip pearl. I thought it odd that the buildouts were of Mastodon so I grabbed one. I have the stag but really can't afford the pearl at this time...

I think it's cool that the main blade is 154CM and the other S30V. Are they still available from AGR?

I beleive the Black lip is still available, they are serialized 1 of 250 and pricey...the stag were not serialized...

I just checked, still avail...go to the site and in the search box type canoe and scroll down...
it would be cool if someone here had one and could post some nice pictures for us to oogle at :)

Dave, Your 2nd photo a fixed blade looks to be a Buck model-- the Big Sky. I don't recall the model number. There were others as well marketed by Cabela's. The Woodcraft comes to mind. DM

Hi Dave,

These knives are called "Special Order" knives. If you look in the March BCCI news letters, Joe H covers these each year.

DM, that RMEF knife is not a 403 Big Sky. The RMEF knife was made in China.

Hi David, I had thought about the stacked leather handled Woodcraft that was sold by Cabelas, but then I remembered the Ducks Unlimited version so the pattern wasn't exclusive to either one. jb is right about the other one, it isn't a Big Sky but I do see a resemblence.

Thanks jb, I'll check those out. You are right about the RMEF knife.

I also remember seeing where Buck made a series for Browning, but I never saw any pictures so I don't know what pattern they were.

Buck did a 301 Stockman and a 311 slim line trapper with a Winchester shield. I believe the 301 stockman was made by Camillus, kind of a headache.

Ok we have a few different topics going on in this thread now IMHO.

Special Order Knife: One of Buck's customers makes a deal for Buck to make the a knife to their specifications. These most often carry the Buck tang stamp, or it could be a total new knife style like the RMEF knife, or it could be a standard Buck knife with some kind of up grade or marking. The ones that come to mind are the Cabela's AG series & the BP coated 154 cpm series knives. Joe H puts out a list of these SO knives for the BCCI each year.

Contract manufacturing knives: These knives are much like the above SO knives. But, do not carry any Buck logo and the customer may have even had Buck sign a confidentiality agreement that they will not disclose they made the item. I think the Browning knives fall into this category. So, good luck getting a list of this type of Buck made knife.

First off, all I have is the cracked scale Canoe from Buck, because of the fancy price on the AGR others. Second, SMKWs had several 300 series that were exclusive for them in addition to the Winchesters mentioned by Matt. Some had no model number some did. Camillus made almost if not all of them. I.E. The yellow scales, all were SMKWs via Camillus. Also Congress, Barlows and Toothpicks. All SMKWs/Cami........use to be hard for me to wrap my mind around that but I have gotten use to it and don't flinch (as much ) now.....

The totally new knives such as the Red Head skinner and the RMEF knives are what I was asking about. The Special Projects list shows at least five knives made for Browning and list a model number that I'm not familiar with so I don't know if they were based on an existing Buck pattern or not.

Were any of those patterns made strictly for the vendors or just modified (scales, colors, etc.) for them?

With the knives 300 and I have mentioned the congress, and barlow/Grandaddy barlow, were never patterns Buck ever used. These knives were made for SMKW and when they finished they were gone. Such being the issue with the Skinner pictured in the OP. Patterns such as the trapper have been used in the Buck line in the 311 slim line trapper, 312 small trapper, and 314 large trapper. The Freedom trapper is a model 329 but still a trapper.

What about that rare knife Franklin Mint did, the one w/ the big bronze or brass stag head pommel...I think someone here on the forum owns that one.
