A question about Kabar's BK aftermarket scales

Kabar, as we all know, sells tan micarta scales for Becker knives...right?

Big Beckers?....Tan Micarta.
Tweeners?.......Tan Micarta.
Necker?..........Tan Micarta
BK14/24.........Orange/black zytel

What gives? Why in the world do they have their excellent tan micarta for all the Becker handle shapes, and then leave the BK14/24 owners with the totally functional but overwhelmingly underwhelming zytel?

I'd bet if they sold the standard tan micarta scales, in the same shape as the zytel scales we can get for the 14/24, and for around $30 just like the BK11 scales, they'd fly out the door.

This makes no sense to me why it isn't being done. Anyone? Ethan?

I haven't tried it because I made my own micarta, and fashioned it into scales on the 24.
But don't the Izula micarta scales fit the eskabar with just the tiniest bit of modding?

They do and they're not bad but not really much of an improvement. More like they just fill in the holes and give a tiny bit of girth

By trimming the insides (the part that would insert into the gaps in the handle) it can screw down and fit, but the external dimension of the knife handle come up past the edges of the scales, so they don't sit flush.

TKC makes their very very nice G10 scales, but you end up spending as much on the scales as you do on a Bk14.

I just can't figure why all the other handles get tan micarta, and these handles...nope. Plastic.

Hey guys, I think you are right NCSlice. The Izula appear to fit and will do the job, buy the tang overly protrudes in comparison to the Zytel or TKC. I really like the latter.

Not to hijack - but all my big beckers have green micarta from kabar, and tweeners have tan.
Older pics show tan micarta for big beckers. Do they change back and forth?
Anyone wanna trade :D

Sooooo....that's it?

As popular as the BK14/24 are, and as popular as Kabar's micarta scales are, we don't have people storming the gates at Olean to demand micarta scales for these knives?

Bah!!!! Time to go make my own.

Well, that's the spirit! if it's not out there, make it!
I really like the zytels myself, nothing says "non-threatening tool" like safety orange. When the 14 was young, just about everybody used the Izzy scales for them. My guess (and that's all it is) is that Kabar decided not to reinvent the wheel.

I've noticed this myself, mine came a light tan and darkened to brown. The "green" pops up from time to time, perhaps it's a batch-to-batch thing; or a different tint to the resin (blueish perhaps) on some stock.

it's because only the secret illuminati has them :D
