A question about Para's

Has anyone by accident had there Para close with a normal grip disengaging the lock? This has not happened to me, but I was wondering if a person had a very firm grip applied would it be possible to trip the lock. I don't want this folding up on my fingers. This is a secondary carry weapon and I will be doing some live blade training. I bought a Manix 2 for this purpose but just hate the locking system. No danger of it closing up because I can barely get it to unlock with normal use. With all the high praise for the Para, thought I would give it a try. And yes I usually use a fixed blade for backup, but was looking for a reason to purchase a Para!:D

The lock is set in almost a reverse liner lock position. It locks differently too, but just giving you a general idea of where it sits.

Never had one release even in a tight grip, and I doubt one could be released like that.

I'm holding a para right now. Unless you were holding it at a very bizarre and uncomfortable angle, I can't see any way that this thing would close accidentally.

Thanks Josh, Spaceman ! I didn't think it would but with as many people who have one here I thought I would ask.

Maybe if you were holding it in a reverse grip with the edge out and have fingers longer than mine it *might* be possible. Both the Gunting and the Yojimbo were purpose designed for Martial Blade Craft (MBC) and both use the compression lock.

I have a hard enough time closing a Para when I am trying to close it. In fact, I have a LNIB Para SE for sale. It seems highly unlikely that it would disengage and fold on your fingers.

It does open sweet as butter, though.

are you left-handed? the comp lock (and para in general) aren't very lefty friendly.

In my experience, it would be next to impossible to disengage the lock during any kind of "normal" knife usage.

In a situation where the lock were to open, it would probably be because you were doing something you should have used a fixed blade for anyways.

I have never heard of this happening with a para. I dont buy linerlocks anymore but I absolutely love the compression lock. But another great feature of the para is that if the knife did somehow close on your finger, it is most likely that the choil of the blade is the part that would hit your finger, saving you from a nasty cut. Its a great knife design.

Unless you removed the pocket clip and held the knife in an awkward grip I don't see the lock being disengaged accidentally.

I am right handed. Do you close it with your right index finger?

yeah, I kind of pinch it between my thumb and index, and the blade drops closed. it's easier on my fingers than my griptillian ever was.

Heck, I have an easier time releasing the lock on the Para left-handed than I do right-handed. In my left, I just reach up with my thumb and push the tab. In my right, I have to shift my grip around and use my index finger. That's the one I usually have stuck in the Spyderhole to close the blade. Probably why my Paras don't get carried much.

I must be missing something. How do you close it with your finger in the hole?

I really disliked the lock on the Manix 2 at first but mine has loosened up quite a bit from opening and closing and is now quite a bit easier to unlock. If you have one you might want to cycle it open some more and see if it becomes better for you.

Just a thought.

Buy it.

And then watch numerous videos on youtube showing how to use the lock mechanism. This is my favorite lock.

sounds like someone likes their back-locks

Thanks for the input all. MtnBkr suggested open and closing the Manix 2 to loosen up the lock. How many cycles would you suggest? I have both knives in hand, just to clarify. Ctk123, I do carry a fixed blade mostly as a secondary, but with all the praise this knife (Para) gets, I thought I might try it as a defense weapon. To be honest, I expected a bright light and angel chorus when I opened the box.I'm just not that impressed IMO. I know I will be a minority, but everybody like something different.
