I have noticed that some SOGs are made from Japanese Steel, and others are American made. Is there any inherent difference between the two grades or types of steel?

Richard, I'm guessing there are probably several different grades/types of steel used by SOG, maybe Chris at SOG can give you an answer, I just know I like them all......... and they are SHARP !!!

Robbie Roberson :D

SOG uses more than 2 types of steel. They use (or have used):

Aus-6 (japanese steel similar to 440a.)
Aus-8 (japanese steel similar to 440b)
CPM S-30V (An American steel, very good edge holding characteristics)
BG-42 (ball bearing steel, no longer being used to my knowledge:()
ATS-34 (japanese version of 154-CM)
SK-5 (japanese I think. High carbon content, it rusts.;) )

Here are some links that you might find interesting.

Edited to add: here is a chart that some of you might recognize:

As regards SK-5 steel, it's one of my SOG favorites, I really like the edge it takes. Here's a quote from a very recognized SOG kinda guy: "SOG SK-5: I've been told that the SK-5 we use (most likely a Japanese made steel) is very close to 0-1." Ron Andersen

Here's a comment from the Talmadge website, "O-1 is a steel very popular with forgers, as it has the reputation for being 'forgiving.' It is an excellent steel that takes and holds an edge superbly, and is very tough. It rusts easily, however. Randall Knives uses O-1, so does Mad Dog."

I'm privileged to have a Randall with O-1 steel and I'm always Very Impressed with the incredible razor edge it takes. All that to say: get a SOG with SK-5 steel !!!

Cheers,

Carl

A ton of stuff to check out. When I get done with all this, I'm either going to be the smartest guy around, or totally confused. Knowing myself, probably the latter. Again, thanks.
