A question about "sterile" rats...

I have a Battle rat that I've had for a couple years and just got my Howling rat a while back, neither has the company logo or any writing on them at all. I was wondering why some are sold sterile and some have the "Swamp Rat" name on the blade? Not that I'm complaining, at this point just HAVING two Rats makes me better off than some folks....

Hi Jim,

Swamp Rat tends to be pretty tight lipped about the goings on of the shop. This has been one of the questions that we've all wondered and I have a couple of theories.

Well, the first couple of runs went sterile. They may not have had a logo decided upon at this point and I think that the Safari Skinner, Rat Tail and Ratweiler were the first ones to have logos. The SS had Mike Thourot's logo. The Tail had Wally Hayes', and the almighty Ratweiler bore the first Swamp Rat logo.

This made Jennifer and Jerry happy. They jumped for joy and the crowds jumped with them. Soon, the Swamp Rat logo began to appear on everything. All of the knives got logos -- from the Ratchet and the Bandicoot to the mighty Battle Rat. I even know of a Busse Knife that got one. Rumor has it that the Rats of the night even gave Garth a Rat tattoo while he was sleeping. (Shhh...don't tell him though. It's not in a place where he'd normally be able to see it. ;) ). They tried to get Jerry too, but he was still up drinking and caught them.

Jerry was angry. He banned the logo from ever being used again and vowed to replace it with something oval.

Of course, the Rats are a proud people who don't like to be bossed around by a Hog. Of course, they don't want an all out war either, so whenever they can, the Swamp Rat logo is proudly placed on each of the knives that leave the shop. The Rats have even been so bold as to put a "Custom Shop" logo on some of their knives. ;) But when Jerry is still there drinking, the Rats omit the logo, just to keep the peace.

So there you have it -- Theory Number 1. I have another parallel theory that results in the logo only being placed when Jerry is around. I would tell it, but the last time I did the Hogs waged their "Die Rats" war on our forum and buried us five pages deep in slaughter. Perhaps another time.

Cheers Jim. I hope that I've answered at least part of your question. :D

Ah, so that's what happened... Well I guess I got on BR that was done when Jerry was looking and another for when Boss Hog was taking an "extended" sip of some JWB.

Stinkin' Hogs - I was looking forward to the rest of the story.

Hey, Troy - How does NASA fit into that?

Wow. That's EXACTLY what I was thinking! Another thought I had, with the Res C handle and coated blade, they MIGHT even be fingerprint proof. I'll keep a close eye on CSI to see if one pops up.

there is someone selling a Black and tan battle rat on EBay with a mystery line of fiction regarding the logo, claiming that it was a rare thing to have.

They also have made a claim that the Res C handle is rare, and Swamp Rat will never make them again. Never mind the fact that new line information has not been released. . .

jeez. It's like there's a bunch of people just hanging out in forums and making up stories. :D

Come on, if its on the Internet it MUST be true....

The first taliwackers back in the day, were for the military Then Jerry challenged Jenniffer to do better, which she did. Since he thought she couldn't do it, no logo was even considered. She proved him wrong. Mysteriously some INFI came up missing, the mutant INFI-Coot emerged from the swamp, and shortly after that the logo was branded onto each and every rat from then on. On occaision, a sterile military over-run happens, then a few unbranded rats slip under the fence, but not many anymore.
A large amount of D-2 was sold by Jerry to the swamp, I believe to foil the success of the swamp rat line, but I think Jennifer has outsmarted him. I have heard rumors of a delicious pie of some sort the hogs can.t get enough of. I wonder what is in that pie. Are you feeling sleepy, Jerry? Hmmmm? Ignore that truck by the stack of INFI, jerry. Somebody will move it later. Another slice of pie, maybe?

To be honest, I prefer the sterile blades. It's like being part of a secret club. Of course, I tell everyone about SRKW anyway...

My brand-new-from-the-SWAMP, black canvas handled, Ratweiler is sterile...

I didn't notice before, but my newly aquired (2nd hand) Desert Jack is sterile as well...

I guess that explains why they haven't generated any litters yet!!! :o :(

Kinda related. Did anyone see the episode with the Battle Mistress?

The INFIcoot had a logo before those came along.

Cool! So, do you know if that was the first one?

I'm curious too - why do people sometimes refer to the "special NASA sterile blade" ??

When the Heavy Hearts shipped out Skunk made reference to 12 sterile blades that were shipped. He said that they were specially requested this way to fill an order by NASA.

I usually don't pay attention to logos, once you start using the knife, the logo doesn't matter. Some of my resiprene rats are sterile, others have the logo etched in silver yet I've seen few in gold:confused: . Same thing with Busses. The first batch of FSH blades had the old SH-E logo on them, later ones had the FSH logo so don't freak out if you get FBM with a FSH or SFNO logo:eek: All Good!

I totally agree. But I like that they mix it up, because if someone does have a specific preference about these things they can usually find it.

I don't know. It was the first I received that had a logo. It seems like a likely candidate for the first with the logo, since it was the first limited run to come out of SRKW.

I don't care much one way or the other about logos. If Eric called me up about my order and asked me whether I want a logo or not on it, I'd choose without... but a logo or lack thereof wouldn't ever influence my purchasing decision, nor would I bother to proactively request one way or the other.
