First, i would like to say that this is great forum with great people.

Second, i was wondering is there was any "official" name for carrying a folder, fixed blade and a hatchet/axe? I've noticed that several people on here use this "system" and i was curious if it has an official name or not. Thanks in advanced.

Third, i have a bit of a dilemma. I plan using this system (described above), however i need some guidance on a fixed blade, and i figured this would be the best place to ask.

Currently i am using Victorinox huntsman for my folder (great tool), combined with my Becker BK2 (amazing tool). This is a great hiking/day trip setup, however i want an addition for an extended/multi day trip, so in a month or so i plan on buying a Gransfors Bruks small forest axe. However this is the dilemma; i believe that with an addition of an axe, my excellent BK2 just wont be as valuable. So i'm in the market for a new knife :D.

So i'm looking for a quality knife in the 4"-5.5" range. I don't really want anything thicker then 3/16th of an inch, but i also don't want a blade thats too thin either (just in case my axe breaks). I'm trying to keep the budget around $100, so please try to keep that in consideration.I would prefer carbon steel, stainless isn't out of the question.

As of right now i'm seriously considering an ESEE 4, or maybe a Fallkniven F1. But seeing how a lot of people here have much more experience then me, i would like to see what others think. Or maybe even some examples of tools from the people that use this system?

Anyways thanks in advanced for any thoughts or suggestions.

Keep an eye on the KnifeMaker's For Sale Area fixed blade forum. You would be surprised at the huge selection of really pretty & well made knives being offered in that price range. And you probably won't mind spending a bit more when you know you are getting a custom knife. Look at a lot of threads & read the specs carefully. Lots of the photos will suggest that you are looking at a much larger knife. The more you look, the more refined your eye & your style taste will become. I am certain you can find the perfect knife & sheath there. Good luck- have fun. Support your Forum knife makers!

"The 1880’s Forest and Stream outdoors writer George Washington Sears, who went by the pen name Nessmuk, is sometimes viewed as the granddaddy of the go-light crowd. He traveled with minimal gear and became famous in modern day bushcraft circles for his “Nessmuk Trio,” consisting of a folding knife, a small double-bit axe, and his distinctive hump-backed, fixed-blade knife."

I don't know if it's the "official" name of the system, but Nessmuk is what I thought of when reading your query.

My "system" is usually a Buck 112, a Wetterlings single edge hatchet, and a Moore Maker small trapper.

A name for your "system" is probably your EDC or Every Day Carry. Most people EDC a folding pocket knife since it is easily carried in a pocket around town. Some others EDC a small fixed blade. An EDC can be anything from a pistol to a lighter, but around here it usually refers to a pocket knife.

Edit: I just re-read and see that you mean carrying all 3 items at the same time. I haven't heard of a term to describe carrying that combo.

i chose a fallkniven S1 over the ESEE5 and that was a very difficult decision as both would have been a fine choice.

i'll throw in a vote for a simple Mora Clipper 840 (if you like carbon steel blades) or the Clipper 860 if stainless is more your style.

<$20, heck, get two.
