i need help trying to figure out what year this knife is.its a 301 stockman, the only thing stamped on the blade is"buck made in usa"which makes me think its old.the box is brown leather colored cardbord and says "buck knives stockman model no.301" with the bolt logo and "famous for holding an edge"if there are any tips you guys can give me on how to figure the year out it would be greatly appreciated

I think the 301 stockman was introduced in 1966. Not for sure but thats the first year it showed up in the Buck dealer catalog.

A picture would help.
Does the bolsters have a groove or are the smooth? If it does it may be a Schrade made knife (Camillus also made the 300 series for Buck)

Production of the Schrade 301 began in 1966. Stamp was:
BUCK
MADE IN
USA

No model number. Bolsters are steel with grooves. This is the first Version.
Second Version has plain bolsters and secondary blades are both stamped "Buck"
Third Version has smooth bolsters and secondary blades do not have Buck stamp.

All three Schrade versions lack a pivot rivet through the bolster.

Buck switched the contract for the 301 to Camillus in 1972. Pretty quick into that contract Buck added model numbers.

The "made in" stamp makes me think you have a Schrade version. So you have roughly 6 years of production of three versions. I hope that's close enough. g

Is it one of these ?

As I said in 315 thread I hate to talk costs, I am usually proven wrong.....that said this is as good as I can do..

If I was buying one in good shape I wouldn't want to pay over 30, if I was selling the same I would want to get over 40. So that means if you put it on the auction site you will get 23, since I am usually wrong.

300,
Thanks for the pics! Worth a 1000 words!

You seem to have the same luck I do in appraising/selling stuff:D

Excellent layout 300. As Ohen said you can't beat a picture for making comparisions.

Seelow123,

Take this with a grain of salt but "Blades Guide to Knives" says your Camillus is $35-$50.
But 300 has shown me with his pictures that Blades isn't necessarily an absolute. In any case the info I gave above was also from Blade. Forgot to note that in the post.
