Within the last month I got a Spyderco s.p.o.t. and a Camillus mini talon in talonite and really like them both. I am amazed at how much faster I can draw my mini talon than any of my other pocket folders with clips.

So here is my qustion: just out of curiosity how many of you have cut yourself or your shirt drawing your neck knife? I haven't yet but it seems likely. I think it would leave a nasty cut. Don't be too proud to speak up. Thanks, Christian.

I am a knifemaker and have only ever ONCE used a neck knife. It was a small O-1 bladed wrapped handle piece I made myself in a Kydex sheath, worn inside my shirt. I accidentally superglued my hand to the workbench (I have done this at least 20times) and suddenly panicked because some 5minute epoxy was starting to cure where I didn;t want it.

I couldn't get to my neck knife like I normally do. (Right hand glued fast to table.) Began to claw through my jacket etc. ended up having to rip open the collar of my Tshirt to get the sheath out and draw the knife to slowly pry my hand off the table.

So not quite the scenario you were after but maybe similar. Jason.

I did cut open the pants pocket open once. I had a CRKT M16 with a flipper. I have no idea how it happened, but it must've snagged something and the thing opened halfway and went through my pants. I didn;t realise and pulled out the knife and it slashed open the top of the jeans pocket. Good thing it was several inches away from anything more important. ;) Jason.

Jason,

I looked at your website to see what kind of guy glues his hand to a table. :-)

You make some very beautiful knives. Classy site, too.

I've got a cold steel spike and a benchmade 160 that i wear pretty regularly. So far i haven't cut myself or my shirt. The chain on the cold steel is pretty long so the knife handle hangs right at the bottom of my shirt. The benchmade comes with cord wrap that is really short so i switched it out with a longer chain.

I guess it just takes a little practice. But i wouldn't doubt an accident happening

worse are the guys who draw a sharp sword from a baldric on their back - and end up with nice long lacerations on their necks...

Can't help on the neck knife thing - too scary for me.

Jason, thanks for the funny story. Got to clean the soda off the keyboard that just came out my nose.:D

Christian, I too just got a neck knife, Nealy AT. I was wondering the same thing. Since I live in the peoples republic of Ca., I won't be wearing it under my shirt anyway. Only on the outside during hikes, fishing, etc. I would expect that a cut is bound to happen if worn and drawn regularly, at least your shirt. Myself, I'll probably jab myself resheathing it.

It is amazing how well the Nealy conceals under the shirt. Just wish I could carry this way.

John...

Used them for years; always expected to cut myself eventually;haven't so far; still worried I will, especially sheathing it under stress.

This is my neck knife cary

Notice the reflective rope used. I added that got the idea fro the maker. Make it nice and easy to find when you are camping and you need to locate that knife you put down at night. Geart blade

I have a collection of neck knives, large and small, and I can't imagine cutting myself or my clothes with them. I just don't use them under those kind of high-stress circumstances. As often as not, i pull the whole rig up and out of my shirt to get to the knife.

Well I carry a Spyderco Police in a neck sheath, so I have to pull it out and then open it. :)

have 2 neck carry knives now...

spydie ss pe dragonfly in a normark rig, tip down/clip out. have it set up with the pivot right on my sternum. just pull on each side of the cord and it comes up and out from under the shirt... just try and cut yourself pulling a folded folder in a neck rig. Can lay on this and not feel it.

other one is the crkt carson f4, in a custom sheath that kit gets made for his. nice and flat, set it up with about an inch of blade over the sternum. Same pull sides of cord and bring it out to draw. Or carry over the shirt(beadblast rusts with me and neck carry) until I get around to removing the beadblast.

I've used some of the fixed blade neck knives, Arclite and such. I prefer to wear those over the coat when winter camping. For other neck carry, I've gone with a folder.

No cuts and with the folder, no conerns of such.

All true. But I may need the blade fast when I really would rather not open a folder, or when I can't. A neck knife is much simpler and faster. With gloves on or when you need that speed and simplicity, the neck knife is unbeatable.[unless you have a knife lashed to your vest or jacket or you're carrying Bladerigger style chest harness ]

I was going to say that the best way to carry a neck knife is upside down strapped to some sort of harness or rigging. For a hiker, it would be strapped to the shoulder harness of your back pack. I reckon it should stay there, ie.- dedicated backpack quick-draw emergency knife. This one should be serrated or combo blade type.

I think it is worthwhile checking out the "gunfighting" manuals. All the difficulties encountered with clothing snagging holsters and concealed items, apply to knives too. I find the neck knife is the worst of all the carry positions.

Cheers. Jason.

I have cut myself once when drawing my neck knife out from under my shirt. Nothing serious, but it did cut. Of course, if my stomach wasnt sticking out like some kind of bloated walrus, it probably wouldnt have happened in the first place. :)

Been wearing a necker almost daily and no problems to date. My favorites are my Tom Mayo TNT shaped mini in Talonite, Rob Simonich Bitterroot in Talonite or my Emerson LaGriffe. Rick Hinderer is gearing up to do a necker and should be most interesting.
