A Question For Beckerheads

Hey guys! All my Beckers are the old Camillus ones. It seems a few Becker knife lovers also hang out over on the ESEE forum, too. I was asked to compare the ESEE Junglas to the Combat Bowie, and did so. But the question of blade thickness came up. My old BK-9 is definitely thicker than the Junglas, which is 3/16" thick. What is the actual blade thickness of the new Ka-Bar BK-9? Is it the same as the old Camillus one? Thanks, guys.

Wow, I just found the spec page. Nice work. So the old BK-9s were a bit thicker at .21". Anyone have both versions? Any real performance differences?

I had one, and it seemed to do fine. I actually think the newer ones perform better, better HT, better edge geometry, and slightly lighter weight help it out in my opinion.

Not that there was anything wrong with them, I just prefer the new BK9. I think there are a few on here that should chime in shortly.

I liked the old Camillus knives. I carried one of theirs in Viet Nam. But when I look at my collection of Marine Combat knives, the Ka-Bars are the best in grinds and finish, followed by the Camillus ones. The Ontario versions are the sloppiest. So it does not surprise me that the new Ka-Bar Beckers are nicer. Thanks for the response.

I have beat the BK9 pretty hard, and it has had no issues at all. I chops in a comparable to many other choppers. Here is a little comparison I did. My 13" golok, 11" cutlass machete, BK9, and my hand forged Husqvarna hatchet.

The hatchet was the clear winner, with the same number of strikes. The BK was comparable to the other two. It was the lightest of the items tested, and all have convexed edge's. Then I hacked a lof in two and split it. The BK bent but popped back to true and is all aces.

It's a great blade that cuts like a chef's knife. Non of the other zombie killers have the Becker geometry. IMO

Now that's good test, cody1. I have so many choppers already, but since they are quite affordable, I may just get another BK-9. I always liked mine better than my Brute. It is lighter and chops about as well. Light and fast works for me, too. Thanks.

seeing just a marginal difference in blade thickness I can't imagine either would make a noticeable difference in splitting. In chopping, weight should matter but again in the little knowledge I have I've seen big choppers fall short in comparison to lighter ones, maybe sometimes its just technique and each knife requires a different approach.

Your review just made me want to buy another knife.. :D

take care,

yup, i regularly surf the esee forum since i have quite a few of their knives too. there's quite a number of beckerheads that are rat pack members too. i guess we all share the function over form viewpoint.

i've placed the ka-bar version bk-9 and the junglas' spines up against each other a few days ago and as far as i can tell (dragging my fingernail across their border) they are the same thickness, if not then it's very, very close.

here's a biggified version of the picture from there, comparing the thicker to the thinner

also, the very rare TRI-BLADED BK9, three swift blades. the first blade lifts, while the second blade cuts, and the third blade is lazy and only does the cleanup...
