Sal / Carlos,

When is the Ocelot coming out? And how much will it cost (rrp)? And what are the dimensions / blade steel etc?

BTW, how much was the prototype? I'm really keen on the Ocelot - actuallly, I like the Wegner but think it's going to be too heavy.

Thanks,
Spyken.

I'm not Sal or Carlos, but here goes anyway,

The Ocelot is now called the Trakker.
The prototype had G-10 scales a while back, but according to a post by Sal 4 months ago, the Trakker will be released with FRN handles. The handle will be green with black pugs. A premium steel is going to be used, maybe VG-10 or BG-42, but it is not yet set. Whatever it is, the blade must hold an edge for a long time for hunters.

Apparently, Tim Wegner was dissapointed with low sales on the Wegner and Wegner Jr which is why the Trakker will have FRN rather than G-10 handles. The Trakker should retail for under $100. Sounds like a pretty good deal if you can swallow those FRN scales.

The FRN version is going to have a more '3D' handle: not as flat as the model pictured. It sounds like a winner.

Oh, and the release date is yet to be set, if I'm not mistaken. Hope for it sometime this fall.

oh no! FRN scales - Sal/Carlos - please, please for such a great design - there can be nothing but G10 scales. (and at that price too:D ). BG42 or VG10 sounds very good. Hope they have alternative colours for the scales like titanium with black pawprints etc.

I for one like FRN. Nice strong matierial and a great choice for the price conscious. BY making it FRN it is within my price limit and I can pick one up:p

Spyken,

according to Sal, machining the pugs into G-10 scales would be extremely expensive. He said that a Trakker with a BG-42 blade and G-10 scales would retail for at least $200.

I think Wegner's reasoning is sound and it will be good for his designs to reach a larger market.

If you really want more expensive scales, you should contact someone who can whip you up a pair. Try Bandit: http://web.tampabay.rr.com/dbrunne2/bancust.htm

I am hopeful for Tracker and trust Spyderco will put out an excellent product, however, I still will miss the old Wegner- a classic!:(
Spyken- have you held an older Wegner? Its listed weight is high, 6 ounces I believe, but it is well balanced in the hand. In pocket it can be heavy which is why I clip it to my belt or outside my backpack or equipment sack- but that is reasonable tradeoff for the sheer "solidness' of the Wegner.

Thanx Think. Some more input.

Both Spyderco & Tim were dissappointed with the sales. Especially since Tim had advertised the model extensively. We felt the concept of the design was sound and we built the model to a very high quality standard. Our VP, Jeff, who is also an avid hunter, felt that the model, which was designed primarily to handle the chores of elk, was too large for the domestic hunters, who primarily hunted deer. Price was also considered a barrier.

We also felt the design was ready for updating. I know that it is Tim's design, but a good amount of recognition for the refinements (evolution) of the new design must also go to Jeff Barhoover and Vince Ford. Both worked long and hard with Tim at the details of the changes. The goal was to create a winner in a variety of markets.

Changes from the original Tim Wegner design:

Smaller in overall size
Lighter
FRN (instead of G-10)
Compression lock (instead of linerlock)
Added a finger choil between the handle and blade for more contol
3D shape of handle is more ergonomic and more comfortable
Pugs added to the handle for eye (& emotion) appeal
Lower MSRP

We're looking forward to bring it to the marketplace.
