A question for the Case experts

Back in the late '70s I had a friend who carried a Case jack, and I am trying to figure out what pattern it was. It looked like the 6235 1/2, but I think it was more in the 3.5-3.75" range. I seem to recall it also having a saber grind - at the time the blade looked rather stout to me (I was carrying a Buck 301 then, and this Case had a much heavier blade than what I carried). It was carbon steel, not stainless. I only remember seeing the master blade open, so I cannot even vouch for it being a two blade or single blade pattern. The scales were either bone or jigged delrin. Does anyone have any idea what pattern it could have been?

Case's larger jack knives that look like the 6235 were the '31 and '99 patterns, with the 99 being the largest of the three. The 31 is 3.75" closed. I think the '99 is about 4 1/4". I have never seen any of them offered with a saber grind but I am far from being a Case expert, so there may have been some at one time.

The case '65 folding hunter has had versions with a sabre grind on the clip blade, and came in both 1 and 2 blade versions. The ones with a saber grind were models like "6165-SAB" or "6265-SAB" for example.

Edit: I did some digging and saw that there was in fact a '31 offered with the saber grind prior to 1964. The one I found references to was a 2231 1/2 SAB, which would be smooth black synthetic handles.

Perhaps others out there. But that's proabably what you saw. A 6231 1/2 SAB, if such as thing was made.

Here is an array of Case's regular Jack knives as mentioned by jc57 above.
As you can see a 2231 1/2 SAB is included (a HEAVY knife!).
2 #35 patterns, 3 #31s and a #99.

P.S. I am no expert either!! I've just always liked these jacks!

Thanks, Charlie. That comparison picture is good. I think it was a 31 pattern. Now that I think about it, it may well have been a 2231. My friend was not afraid to use it, and the blade was very dark gray, almost black, with patina.

You are welcome. I've always liked that group of Jacks. It offers a no-nonsense choice of a classical Jack, to suit one's needs.

As compared to the 35's and 31's (and they are stout knives) the 99 is a monster! OH

Thanks, Mark!
I always stick it in the back of its drawer and lose it for a while, so I can say WOW when I find it again!!:D

Thanks Dan and Ernie!! I feel lucky to have that knife!!
