Hi guys,

Ok, here's the deal. I plan on visiting a dear friend who lives up north. I'm curious if I'd be able to take my edc with me. I've never flown, so I'm not sure if security would let me. Even if I can't keep it on my person, is there any way they'd transport it?

The visit aside, I'm eventually going to move in with my friend. How would I go about transporting all of my knives? I'd hate to have to get rid of them because airport security thinks I'll try to take over the plane or something like that.

Thanks in advance!

Safest way is probably to mail it ahead to your friend. That way you can insure it. If it gets snaged out of your luggage you will be SOL.

Mailing it ahead is actually a great idea. If you happen to be transporting firearms with you on the plane (checked luggage) You can keep your knives in the same locked baggage with your firearms.

I throw it in my checked bag. mailing it would be a better choice tho imo. I dont trust tsa agents.

If you're moving, then mail all your knives, eventually with a courier. If your only visiting, then place your edc in your checked luggage. Either way, do not carry a knife on your person when flying.

You could put it in your shaving kit that would be inside a locked suitcase that you check in before moving on to the boarding area of the airport.
Like others have said -DO NOT HAVE A KNIFE ON YOUR PERSON when you're passing through the TSA physical inspection area. You do not need the delay or embarrassment.

Obviously it must be in your checked luggage. And...

If it's valuable, leave it at home.

Use a good suitcase and not something easily to break into for your checked luggage when you take your travel knives with you when flying. If you intend to ship your knife collection use a courier or registered mail and put insurance on the package.

Just echoing what has already been said... Don't carry one on you (TSA will confiscate/steal it at the security checkpoint). If you must, throw something relatively inexpensive in your checked luggage. Even then, there is a chance TSA will open your bags and steal it from there. Mailing it is a bit more hassle, but probably safest (box, not envelope, and with enough packing material so it doesn't rattle around inside).

In the end, I couldn't bear the idea of parting with my xm-24 for even a second. I've decided it'll be easier to travel by Amtrak. Thanks again, guys!

If I'm going for more than say a weekend, I'll most likely put something in my checked luggage. Nothing expensive just in case. So it is something like a Kershaw Skyline, multi-tool and/or a Vic SAK that I can easily and cheaply replace with a trip to WalMart or Target when I get to my destination or back home.

I've shipped before to send nicer knives to my destination and back for long stays of 2 or more weeks. For a day trip or a weekend, I don't take anything with me and if I get a chance, I'll just pick up a Vic Classic or Cadet at my destination and mail it back home or give it someone.

LOL, I hear that! :)

I'll start with the disclaimer that I've never tried this...

I've read a few threads here in the past about folks who have taken down their folder, like a Hinderer XM model, removed the blade and wrapped it up securely and then placed it in their checked bag. They then place the frame (sans blade) in their carry-on bag. Either part is less likely to be taken as a folder blade is pretty useless without the frame to a thief, and the frame without the blade isn't a "dangerous object" by itself. Maybe someone who's actually tried this can weigh in on it about their experience?
