so i had my other post about using the powder form of Rit black dye and it came out purple, im thinking, what if instead of just using hot water and powder like the directions say, what if i mix a little bit of black spray paint with it. spray paint is hard to wash off, so if i add a little bit of that is mixed with dye, would that work.

No. What that would most likely do is result in the dye soaking into the leather, the paint pigment staying at the top which would then get in the finish.

Man, really... throw the Rit out. Get some Fiebings. Heck, I'll send you some.

Dude... 3 threads looking for different answers from the same guys on the same question?

I understand not wanting to pay $12 for shipping some dye. I really do.... But look at all the headaches you've had over this problem that could be solved by simply ordering some Fiebings.

That's cost you a lot more than $12.

Figure out some other stuff to order too, then the shipping won't be for just one item. ;) :)

No. Lol, NO.

Tell you what, send me your address... I'll give you a sample of the black die and throw in some black edge kote as well... free... and I'll pay the shipping. Just one catch... no more threads about Rit dye.

You're a heck of a guy, and that made me laugh out loud. I hope thedirector won't take offense to my post earlier, I honestly don't know if he's joking or not about mixing the spray paint and dye. Interesting thread, either way.

There is a Sheaths subforum which might be a better place for this. Get the Feibings. End of story. If you are worrying about the $12 for shipping this is not the hobby for you. There are hundreds of things you will eventually need or want. Ultimately you will be making an investment of thousands of dollars in this endeavor. If $12 is freaking you out this will be a short term hobby.

i got it on amazon, paid $7 and got free shipping, i may be worried about money now, but i just need to sell 1 of my knives and that will be enough to get all the materials i need to make another batch of them

Glad to hear you ponied up for the right stuff.

As a side, I stopped at a shoe repair shop in my town yesterday. They had a fabulous selection of most of the dyes and chems to make leather sheaths. I ended up buying more Fiebings dye as well as some Angelus leather paint. I suggest looking for a local shop and seeing what they carry. They may be happy to include whatever you might need in their next order too.

Good luck.
