A Question of Pronunciation

This has bothered me for a little while. Is "Schatt" pronounced SKAT or SHAT?

Kids got me one of the File & Wire Gunstocks for Christmas/Hannukah.
 
SHOT is another option. Call the company. That's your best bet for a surefire answer.

Please report back because I'm probably mispronouncing it.

The Sch is pronounced like the Sch in Schrade. As in Schrade-Walden!

It's a German surname. "Schatten" means shadow in German, and is pronounched as "shjatten". So Schatt is "Shjatt", with the A as in the British way of saying "dance".

Eh? How does the "j" get in there, if you don't mind my asking? ;) I would think it's more like "Shutt-en" for "Schatten". (I was born in Hamburg, btw :) )
 
The correct pronunciation of the German Schatten has the "a" sound just like the "o" in the American pronunciation of the word shot.

That's not correct, it is, as I've said, more like the A in the British (not the
American) pronunciation of the words "dance" or "France".
 
Holy smokes, where did you guys learn your German? ;) It's pronounced like the stay at home "shut in", except "en" replaces "in".

Die Sonne und der Schatten....etc, etc, etc. Verdammt noch mal! ;) :D ;)
 
I can see this has been an enlightening thread. Almost as much fun as asking how to pronounce Mannlicher-Schoenauer....

Well, since this horse isn't quite dead yet and continues to beg for a beating, my friends from England pronounce "dance" as "dawnse". So then it's supposed to be pronounced "Schawtten"? :confused:

Never heard it pronounced that way myself, but then again I'm from Hamburg and we're just not that cultured! ;)
