A Question on Beckers

I bought several Becker Combat Bowie blanks from a friend.
They are not ground. I am told at the factory they were heat treated and then ground.
Can anyone confirm this?
If they are already heat treated, how did they grind them at the factory?

Thanks in advance,
Dale

We ground them after hardening; big Siepmann Grinder, lots of coolant!!

Were all of the Camillus-made knives ground after hardening? I have about two dozen of the (non-Becker) blanks that SMKW sold. Can I assume that they're hardened if they're already ground?

thx - cpr

S30V & 154CM (or ATS-34 previously) were ground soft & then hardened.
All other blades were ground hard, (the OLD & well shagged Camillus grinders were unable to grind the premium stainless steels hard. It was only because we had such talented guys that knew the machines as if they were their wives, that we were able to grind anything at all!)

From a production standpoint, it is always better to grind hardened blades. Keeping ground blades consistantly straight thru the heat treating process at Camillus was frankly impossible.

Thank you Phil for your information.

As a hobbyist with a workshop in my garage, I don’t have a Siepmann Grinder, just a belt sander.
I do have a water-cooled 8” Scheppech grinder, but it is no where close to a production quality machine. It does a nice job of sharpening, but I would not know how to grind a knife on it.

Do you know of anyone who could grind these? Or perhaps you have an alternative method? I am open to suggestions. I love the pattern and would like to complete 4 or 5 of these as I have several family members in the military now.

Thanks again for your help,
Dale

Belt sander would work fine.
Just cool blade in a bucket of water after each pass.
