Hi i have couple of questions and i wonder if you guys could answer them for me.
I have noticed that when use the edge if my helle (sanvik) to scrape wood to produce a fine finish eg scraping spoons or bow drills the edge will role however my carbon mora can stand up to this abuse why is this?

I’m also thinking of getting the spyderco bushcraft when it comes out the steel is 52100 ball bearing steel, how will this stand up to edge scraping.Just out of intrest how do steels like s30v and vg10 stand up to edge scraping.

Since this is my first post its only polite to introduce myself I live in uk, Wales I am one of the bushcraft crew and just hoped over from bushcraftuk.

The carbon mora's are generally 2-3 HRC points harder which makes the edge stronger and resistant to rolling. It is also quite sensitive to edge angle so you can increase the performance by rolling the edge just a little or adding a micro-bevel depending on how you sharpen. Most actual wood scrapers, not knives the actual wood working tools, are really soft, usually spring hardened so 45-50 HRC. However the edges are at 90 degrees so they are quite strong and last for a long time.

52100 is a fine grained steel but Spyderco, as of last noted, is aiming for a hardness of 58 HRC which is lower than the carbon Mora's and similar to the stainless ones. S30V and VG-10 are both very high wear steels so they will work well as edge scrapers as long as you make the edge obtuse enough. It only needs to be a tiny micro-bevel, about 0.1mm wide or so.
