A question on the S&W HRT Magnesium

I have a question on the S&W HRT Magnesium folders. By using the word Magnesium in the name of the folder one would assume that Magnesium would be used somewhere on the knife. And by reading a few of the reviews that have been posted lately I was under the assumption that the handles were magnesium. But if you read here http://www.1sks.com/store/smith-and-wesson-hrt-magnesium.html , it says “The injection molded handles smoothly flow and swell” . I can see the “smoothly flow and swell” part, but the “injection molded”? That sounds like a plastic of some type, not magnesium. What’s up with this?

According to the info on the homepage of Taylor Cutlery who makes S&W knives, the handle is actually magnesium.

That's what I was thinking. But does anybody have the knife?
Is the handle metal or plastic?

I have the knife. The handle feels like bead-blasted metal, and also has the heat retention properties of metal, i.e.: it gets very cold. Not to mention that it grips well and is very comfortable!

So I'm pretty sure it's Magnesium...

Magnesium is easily cast in metal injection molding (MIM). This produces castings that require little or no trimming or filing.

It's a nice looking knife.

The handles are in fact magnesium and injection molded. This makes them much easier to work than aluminum.

Does magnesium - or zinc for that matter used ona handle offer any protection to the blade against corrosion? I can see how it would act as a sacrificial anode if the entire knife were immersed but in ordinary usage does it have any advantages?

I think Magnesium is similar to Titanium in that it wont rust, but I really don't know much about it. Where does it sit in the RC Scale? What are some of it's properties? Does anyone know?

well if you take a untility knife you can make a pile of shavings that will make a very hot fire!!! ;)

Yeah, apparently Magnesium combusts white hot! If I ever have a house fire I'm gonna be heading in the opposite direction of my knife!

I picked one up here in the prodo forum for $25 . . . it was well worth it. It has the prestigious place of occupying the center console of my car . . . it is nicer than I expected!:D

Yea, I've had the magnesium fire starters and I have seen a guy doing motorcycle tricks with magnesium sliders making big time sparks, but is there any other porperties that are interesting?

The handles are definitely magnesium. Magnesium is a light weight and corrosion-resistant metal. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio. The S&W HRT is, IMHO, a remarkable value.

The "Mag" wheels on my old race car are Magnesium.Ansen Wheel Co. ...and they tend to oxidize pretty badly. They are light and strong. Of course the company went out of business.

Mr Bomb. you dont have to worry about your knife catching on fire unless you turn it into splinters (It wont burn unless you cut it up into small splinters).

Or put it into a BIG fire.

I did find an ad for the fire starter that states that magnesium burns at 5400 -f.
