A question on wood ?

I have decided that I would like to make my collection based around the different types of wooden handles that are available on production folding knives. I'm as green as grass when it comes to collecting knives and have really only just started to take an interest in the hobby.
What are the common and not so common types of wood used and what manufacturers offer the best selection and availability?

It's hard to get a variety of woods on modern production folding knives. Personally I think your best bet would be to contact custom scale makers and inlay service providers for a good variety at a relatively low cost.

Here's a custom wood scale on a Benchmade 530

FPNI.

Not much wood on modern production folders. There's a lot more wood to be found on fixed blades....

You can find them. It's going to be a lot easier on fixed blade knives though. For the most part that's where the really beautiful wood is.

For starters I'd recommend the A.G. Russell catalog, the better Nordic knifemakers, and, IMO, Knives Ship Free has lines of Bark River, Arno Bernard and other great wood-handle knives.

You'll also find the occasional wood folder but wood on a folder is a different animal. Spending life in a pocket will eventually degrade the wood appearance-wise and calls more for synthetic or harder natural materials.

I appreciate wood too. There's some beautiful stuff out there. Good luck wid it.

I would actually recommend simply collecting samples of unfinished scales-- very affordable, practical and you get to see the beauty of each rare wood.
( disclaimer I do have a tropical ironwoods/ rosewoods collection-- I just buy pen blanks then look at them when I want to enjoy the beauty of a particular wood grain)

Thank you all for the replies. Being a newb to collecting I may have mistook the scales on the knife for the handles. I see there's knives that have wood inlays and knives that have full scales of wood. That was more what I was referring to, not to a solid wood handle. Sorry my bad, I need to learn the lingo!

Enlan make some very good Rosewood scaled folders; EL-01D, L05-1, EL-05, M028, M027. M011 In pale wood as is the Exduct E01. Boker's Magnum range has a few as well.
