hey gang, hope everyone is well. I have an Ontario Jungle whatever 18” machete (the $28 they used to issue to someone somewhere, it’s coated carbon steel) and a friend is using it as a prop (“just ask Florida, he has lots of knives!”) I’m happy to sacrifice it honestly, I’ve barely used it. Here’s my question, HOW do I DULL this monster? I have so far: drawn it across laterally and back and forth sideways over: concrete, brick, a rock and a Lansky Sharpening puck - and I’m still scared to press on the edge with much force. It’s not cutting paper or coated board but it seems like wherever I managed to roll it, there’s a sharp edge from the burr. Any suggestions? I don’t care if it makes it beyond repair…. Thanks!

Run it over a stone at 90 degrees perpendicular or use a bench grinder/ angle grinder at 90 degrees. It will still be dangerous if swung, just not bump into dangerous.

thank you SO much for the input. It’s actually getting “bedazzled” so I’m not worried about looks or scratches and I have a few flat files so I will try that before having to drive to an angle grinder! Appreciate everyone’s help! You guys rock.

In the sharpening subforum (MTE), they could tell you about precision dulling techniques using expensive gear to obtain a uniform, mirror polished radius. And then ask you to post 1000X electron spectrograph images of it.

Or, you could just run the edge diagonally across the 60 grit wheel on your bench grinder.

Your choice.

funny how well heat treated 1075/1095 can hold an edge

I've been using my 22" ontario on soft & hard wood, clearing trails & heavy wood work, and the edge still holds up

Whatever you use to grind on it, I would also round the former edge (like a crowned spine) to remove both any burrs as well as sharp corners.

Funny you should mention that. I’ve decided the Micarta National Savings Bank only gets spent on a good sharpening system before anything else. I was close to pulling the trigger on a KME and I found the TS Prof Kadet reviewed by a few YouTubers I watch. (I know, ya just take it all with the assumption they are given free stuff) informative tho and they both have drawbacks and ‘better’ aspects…

But neither one would sharpen this 18” Ontario Jungle monster without having to re-clamp it 3 times 😂 still weighing my choice (KME is $150 cheaper with 3 basic stones versus Kadet with the same) 🤔 thanks again everyone 👍
