A question to Mr. Glesser regarding Manix secondary bevel

Hello,
I purchased a Manix a few days ago from a local dealer. I ordered it
via phone and got by mail service since this dealer is in another
city some 100 km away. Almost immediately after I opened the knife I
noticed that secondary bevel (edge's grind) is somewhat uneven and
significantly wider on the left side of the blade than on the right
side. On the right side is about 1 mm wide while on the left side the
width of the secondary bevel is almost 2 mm. Beside that the edge was
a bit blunted (it reflected light) at the tip, some 4 mm's in lenght
but this was maybe caused by someone at the store. Anyway that didn't
bothered me as much as the secondary bevels. I am not entirely happy
with the knife because of inprecisely executed secondary grind. I
expected higher standard in edge grinding from a company like
Spyderco and especially from a knife which is not the cheapest model.
Otherwise (minus a minor scratch on a clip) the knife gives a very
solid appearance and good ergonomics.

I would like to know if such significant difference in secondary
bevels grind is considered normal by Spyderco's standards?

Here are some photos of both secondary bevels and although the photos are not of good quality the difference can be easily noticed.

And now comes the point where it is pointed out that Spyderco knives are factory knives, not custom;). There are going to be flaws, and in that case, the flaw is purely cosmetic, and shouldn't affect performance in the least.

However, the answer to your actual question is no, that's not normal. All the edge bevels on the Spydercos I own have been even and symmetrical on each side of the blade(except for one Gunting which had the same issues yours has). Yours appears to be a fluke.

Some of the blades(Civilian) are hand ground, and differences are to be expected, but the Manix is not hand ground so far as I know.

Short answer, it's not normal.

I can't see any of the photos.

If the difference is as significant as you say though, I'd surely be quite dissapointed in my high end spyderco. I'm sure their warranty will take care of you.

It's getting to the point where there are EXTREMELY few knives that I'm okay with buying sight unseen in general. However, quite a few Manixes have passed through my hands and they all seemed perfect to me. Probably a 1 in 10,000 thing.

So it seems that such significant difference between bevels is not standard or expected spyderco grind. To be honest, yes, I am disapointed because of this. I expected even and precise grinds on both sides as they were on my Endura when I bought it and as can be seen on other photos of Manixes. In true meaning of the word perfect this is fairly far from perfectly ground secondary bevel, the edge itself is slightly uneven on the first third of the blade although this cannot be seen on those photos. I'll try to get a better digital camera next week to make better photos.

I received my new Manix yesterday (Wednesday) and I do notice that right-side of the knife edge is a tad wider than the other side. It is noticable but nothing that I really care about. BTW, the sharpness of my Manix is incredible! Of all the knives I've acquired, this is the sharpest factory knife I have. Amazing.

Hi Hyperborean,

As mentioned, all of our knives are hand sharpened, which accounts for the sharpness. I guess none of them will be absolutely perfect.

As you sharpen the knife, in time, I'm sure you'll sort it out. I don't think performance will be affected.

If it really bothers you, I imagine you can contact Warrantee and Repair and they can find one for you that is closer to your expectations.
