Is it fine to keep ferric chloride in a glass container? I know it won't hurt the glass, but will the light allowed in and through the container degrade the solution?

The only bad thing about glass containers is that most have metal lids, which will be affected by the FC. Light won't be a problem.

It your jar has a metal lid, you could put a double layer of saran wrap over it before you put the lid on. I don't think the ferric chloride will degrade the saran.

Another option is to store it in some polyethylene or polypropylene bottles with plastic.

PVC or ABS are a good choice for ferric chloride; they both come in many configurations and can be cut to whatever size you might need.

The only drawback to glass is it shatters when impacted.

I had ferric in a glass container once, and then dropped the knife in a little harder than I wanted (it slipped out of my grip as I was lowering it in) and it hit the bottom and popped the bottom off in a perfect ring. Luckily, I had the ferric in the sink, and I ran about 30 gallons of cold water down it to wash it out. I now keep it in tupperware that I bought from a garage sale for 50 cents.

I put mine in the large detergent bottles, most of them you can just pull the spout out leaving a large mouth and a side benefit you get a handle.

Thank you all very much. I've got mine in a pvc container already, but have a good sized wine jug used to ferment the wine in that would look really bitchin' with a knife etching in it. It'd really look cool. Thanks again.
