I'm looking at getting the Case Duck Unlimited Bird hunter for my brother and he wanted to get the English Walnut handled version. I am a little hesitant about getting the wood handle because this would be his 1st knife and also his hunting knife and I was worried if the handle got wet it might expand. Does anyone know if these handles are sealed?

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm inclined to believe the handles are stabilized anyway (sealed).

BUT, even if not, a simple way to protect them would be to oil the wood. Something like Walnut oil would be perfect for that one, I'd think. Two or three applications of it, wiped on with a cloth or paper towel, let it sink in. So long as the scales are oiled, water shouldn't be a significant issue. Just wipe the knife dry as needed. If/when the scales start looking a little 'dry' again, re-oil. I think that would do you fine. Wood that's treated this way, over time, will become all the more attractive. :)

Could also use something like linseed oil or Danish oil (mix of linseed oil, varnish and mineral spirits). Either of those will permanently seal the wood, for all intents and purposes.

Thank you David for the response! The first oil that came to mind was linseed oil, but that walnut oil would be quite nice!

I don't have any Case knives with English walnut handles but I have a few with ebony handles. Case did an excellent job treating the handles. I don't think he'll have problems if the knives are well kept but if the knives are going to see heavy use, he might treat the wood with wax. It hasn't been necessary with my Case knives so far but I have treated some of my other ebony handled knives with wax. ...if the original finish starts to wear, it could be refinished with linseed or another oil.
