I helped my friend's 12-year-old Son pick out a knife at Gander Mountain about two years ago -- he'd saved up for one and figured I might have some suggestions. The choice was easy as far as I was concerned. I suggested the Delica 4 plain edge, which he bought.
He hunts with his Dad, so he has put this knife to some good, honest use over the past two years. Yet, he has taken good care of it at the same time, with no edge chips or scratches evident on the blade. Just some thick pine sap that I have yet to remove despite my best efforts and chemicals.
Anyway, he was whittling with it on his front porch two weeks ago and apparently the pivot screw fell out, followed by the pivot barrel pin. I know this young fella doesn't have torx drivers, so I assume there was a Loc-Tite deficiency on the pivot screw. In the ordeal he lost one of the bronze washers, the pivot screw, and the little washer under the screw. He brought the parts to me in a sandwich baggie and asked me to do what I could to salvage it.
I went through all my extra screws and washers, and had nothing that fit. So I emailed Spydie Customer Service via their website and requested replacement washers, pivot screw, and screw washer, fully and gladly prepared to get a call for payment information. No call came in, and honestly, I forgot about it.
Flash forward to yesterday. A package from Spyderco was in my mailbox that contained all of the parts needed to repair the knife, with a little vial of Loc-Tite to boot. I repaired it, and applied Loc-Tite to all of the screws just for good measure. I also took a pic with my phone and sent it the young fella's Dad to alert him it was ready to go -- I sharpened it up for him and removed as much of the pine sap as I could. That stuff has stay power.
I want to sincerely thank you, Spyderco, for making a kid's day in a big way.
