A quick video of my fairbanks #150 running.

Great job getting that thing up and running Dan.
When you say 2/3 power, ya mean adjustment on the treadle stop?
What size motor are you running?

Thanks birdog4; the guy that had it before me had the hard work of rebuilding it. I basically just built the clutch and brake system.

I mean the stroke length, I have it set at about 2/3 and we we running the clutch (treadle) to produce about 2/3 of the strokes per minute. So in reality it was about 1/2 the full power. Going full speed (not full stroke though) with this machine is insane, I'll try to get my girlfriend to take a video of me drawing out a 1-1/2x1-1/2x6 billet. I'm running a 7.5hp baldor because all baldor 5hp motors have a shaft that was too small for my flat belt pully. It was about the same price and only increases the electric bill by $1 per 8 hours vs. a 5hp.

I really have no need to use full power until I make new dies that can handle up to 5" round... and then I just need some larger steel hehe.

I wish you were closer, I'd like to see that running.
Ya just have to run it a while to find the spot where it hits the hardest.
What kinda dies are you planning for it?

I'm planning on just a pair of combo dies like the ones I have, 4x6 flat surface and 2-1/2x4 drawing surface. But the dies will be shorter so I can fit taller pieces of metal in.

You should come up for one of the hammer-ins this summer. Aldo, Sam, Dewey, and a few others will be there.

Where is that drooling smiley when I need it!

It is amazing how smoothly your hammer runs Dan, Usually the mechanicals you see are very cliipty clacky and stuff, but yours is quiet, smooth and STUNNINGLY powerful. Man I cannot wait to get up there :D I cannot imagine it at full bore.

Dan,

Don't know if you have access to a Fairbanks catalog or not. The "E" size (150#) is "Adapted To Work Stock" of 3 1/2".

Other numbers from the catalog for a 150# are; 275 beats per minute max speed, diameter of the driving pulley of 16". I'm curious what your motor rpm and motor pulley diameter are.

Mike

Love the hammer but I got to ask. Whats a king pin? The only king pin I know of, was used to hold the spindle on a old F100 Ford pickup I used to have. They are about 1'' in dia. and about 6+" long and hard as Haiti's. Are we talking about the same King pin? The one in the video looked much longer! Don't know what kind of steel the king pins I am referring too, are made of but thye might make a good knife but would almost definately take a power hammer to hammer one out easily.

Mike I'll get the pulley diameter tonight. Although its adapted to work 3-1/2 round anything under 5" round should be fine. But I'm not sure how much steel I'm gonna find over 3" round.

Dixie; the king pin is from one of our tractors. It was only about 2" round by 8" long so I'm guessing it was one of the smaller tractors.

Yea Sam! Drag your arse up here and check your email. :)

Hey Dan,

When are you having your hammer-ins this summer? I'll have to look up Turin and see how far it is from Merrimack, NH. Maybe I can pick my pretty piece of economic stimulus steel prize up in person?!

All the best, Phil

That's an amazingly cool hammer Dan. Never fit in my shop though so you don't need to worry about me sneaking it out if I come to visit:D

Thinking of which, I hadn't realized that you're only 4-5 hours away...

Phil its about 5.5 hours, if you let me know when your coming to the north east I'll see if I can get a small hammer in going if your interested. Either that or you could just stop by, regardless your gonna at least play with the hammer. :)

Thanks Dan, my only rule for people coming to visit is that I talk on the phone with you a few times before hand; or we meet in person at a hammer in or ashokan. I still live with my mother so its the least I can do on her behalf.

Hey Dan,

Thanks for being willing to have me over. I checked out Rand McNally. A twelve hour round trip might just be a bit much for me to pull off at this time. I'm already braving a second round at Indian Georges in Massachusetts. I'm also hoping to make the ABS New England Bladesmithing Symposium and Knife Show in Auburn Maine. Guess I better leave a few days open for family.

All the best, Phil

Hey Dan, that is SWEET!!!!:thumbup:

I'm lookin' forward to getting down there to play. Did you get your tort fired up, and ore shipping arranged??
