A Quiet Celebration

Almost a decade ago now I wrote an email to Morgan Taylor, who was the President of Taylor Brands at the time. I questioned his logic behind the knife designs he was producing at the time, the logic in his steel choices for them, and his logic in country of origin. Considering how poorly most of the new ones performed compared to the old Schrades I had carried and used thoughout much of my earliest wilderness studies in the 80s. His response the next morning was to call me out on it, and give me the opportunity to demonstrate my knowledge and ability or shut me up (no he didn't word it that way). Having been a knife fan all my life, having designed a few for hand made knife makers over the years, and having modified a LOT of knives to suit my needs over the years, I had already drawn out a few knives that I felt would be better suited, design wise and steel wise, to bear the moniker "Extreme Survival" that they were using for a specific section of their knives. So when he responded the next morning calling me out on my thoughts, and asking how I would like to design a few knives for him I immediately sent one of the drawings to him. This drawing pictured with the knife that came from it.

It went into production almost 9 years ago, and this is the thread on that.

Soon Len McDougall, also being an old school Schrade fan himself, wanted to check it out. He put it through some extreme tests and then wrote it up in Tactical Knives magazine.

Today, nine years later, I have a centerfold of my designs in the Schrade catalog, pictured here with a Golden Spike just like the one I carried through countless miles of wilderness studies.

And one of them has even made the cover of Knives Illustrated.

But the quiet celebration this weekend is about the very first one. Because although they currently have it incorrectly listed as being 1095 "stainless" steel and the 1095 is obviously not stainless (yes I have written them emails about that), that knife is currently the #1 Best Selling Knife in fixed blade hunting knives on a very large venue most of us are familiar with.

And in honor of that, my constant companion and I took a quiet moment to process it all and the long winding road through chaos and insanity that lead there. And then to raise a glass in thanks for life and the unknowable mysteries within it, and for the friends who make our world a better place and help us with our challenges and struggles through this series of events we call life.

Cheers!!

Just more evidence that the things we do in life generate ripples.

We do not always know the effect, sometimes we do. so important to make sure our ripples come fomr a good place.

I am glad that you get to see the effects of your positive life. They have to help in some way to bury some of the past.

That's awesome Brian! Congrats!

Thank you Greg! Yeah, still hard to process completely, but really cool. :)

Thanks Bill :) Yeah, even in my worst moments of crisis of faith in anything or anyone, I had seen the pattern of the kind of energy one puts out into the world and the universe is the energy they will get in return. So I started long ago trying my best to the best kind of energies into the world and my life that I could manage. I know i'm far from perfect, but I do try to be a good person.

It cannot not bury it at the moment, at least not all of it, as I keep dredging most of the repressed stuff back up in the process of writing my autobiography. But it does give meaning to some of the madness, and that is very therapeutic for me.

I hope I can manage to leave behind something worthwhile, for my daughters, grandson, and others too.

You are the man my friend

Thank you Bob.

Oh, and not to knit pick or anything, but the first time I ever heard any utter the quote on life being too short to carry an ugly knife, I believe it was around 3 or 4pm on Friday June 4th, 2010 at the Cobb Galleria. The day I first met him in person.

Very cool!

Thank Heber!

Congratulations! Your designs are about the only thing I like in scharades modern lineup, and also the only budget scharade fixed blades I tell non knife people to get when looking for something in that realm.

Just put my preferred edge on the SCHF55. I’m starting to like this little pocket tank and ordered another one. I’m finding myself grabbing this knife more and more.

It’s the stories you’ve shared in tandem with the great design and choice of 1095 that makes me love this thing. I like the robust rubber belt strap as well.

Thanks again for sharing your story. It creates customer loyalty and also adds to the cool factor of ownership.

nice job Brian

that a cool bit of history

Thanks man! :)

Thank you! There are other models in the line up that I like the profiles of, and some I'm even okay with the ergonomics of, I'm just not happy with the materials they are made out of so I have no interest in purchasing them and even declined the opportunities to try them out free of charge once I became familiar with those steels and how they performed. Obviously there are steels I like a little better than 1095, but when it comes to keeping a price point that is workable for the average working person out there to be able to afford a decent production user knife, 1095 is still one of the best options out there.

Congratulations Brian, definitely something to be proud of.

Thanks man :)

Thank you. LOL, I think pocket tank may be a good nickname for that one. I was going for something along the lines of some of the small heavy duty tools on the market, but making it much more functional in the knife role as I wanted it to be above all else a tough knife.

It all still seems surreal at times. Especially in moments when I am working on the chapters of my book that pertain to the early 80s when the insanity was at it's worse. When I shut my eyes and visualize those moments so I can write out the details of a specific paragraph, then open them again and look around, it's like snippets form two completely different lives in two completely different times.
