Nope... nothing fuzzy about these guys!

I had an amazing weekend! I got home this afternoon after a 6 hour drive from my favorite place on earth. It really doesn't get more beautiful than Canim Lake BC =)

I've spent all my summers as a kid up here for 8 weeks every year and my best memories have been in the outdoors! Unfortunately with University and jobs my time up there every year is now limited to 2-3 weekends so I really enjoy every chance I get up there!

Here are the main grounds... as you can see there is a bath-house with showers and toilets (yeah really roughing it lol) and a cottage that we used to rent, but now mainly use for guests. My grandparents, my family and two uncles have trailers up here permanently that we set up here in 1991.

Well... what's a better place to test out my shiny new unscathed knives? I know this isn't really a "survival" situation whatsoever, but I'm new to this and I need to try out my skills before I need to use them for real right?

I decided to first try my hand at a figure-4 deadfall. Unfortunately I neglected to bring a diagram of all the notches required to make it work... so it took about 3-4 different notching attempts to come up with this. Now that I look at it at home WITH the diagram, I figure it was pretty close. It actually did function properly and was quite sensitive, but next time I will practice it with proper notching haha.

Later I used my 4 to baton several logs. I never thought that it would actually feel less tiring than using an axe... I guess the weight of an axe really makes a big difference.

Then I used my IZULA to feather the sides of the split pieces, a technique I've noticed many of you on the forum use :p

Then I took a piece of aspen bark (had tons of dry strip of it from the baton logs) and gathered some shavings, crunched up dry leaves and small pieces of bark.

Unfortunately I didn't have anyone willing to take action shots of me with my firesteel... but about 15-20 strikes later I had my little platter of shavings lit and put in my tee-pee style fire setup!

And there you have it! I felt quite accomplished at making a fire so successfully my first time... although I suppose I should practice a few times more before I get too cocky ;)

Now some glamor shots of my knives... ahhh they are starting to get some character with coating rubbed off =) (the 4 at least)

Both stayed razor sharp through my experimenting and plenty of baton work! Just further reinforcing my confidence in my knife purchase and paving dangerous roads to buying more very soon :D

We had a bit of time to do some shooting aswell... however after 5 minutes an 3 shots we found ourselves overwhelmed by wasps. Apparently we had disturbed a basketball sized nest hidden perfectly under the metal table.
The rifle is my dad's .22 . He also has a 30-30 and .308 that we didn't get around to using, but next time =)

Oh... and here is my vehicle that I knighted with an ESEE sticker before I left. Not much of a "wilderness" vehicle but I'll be getting a proper truck some day xD

Hope you enjoyed reading/looking!

that's some really nice views! good for you for actually using your knives and practicing with them

no matter how many times i light a fire successfully out in the woods i always feel like i can't take it for granted. all it takes is a downpour or me getting an ice cold dunking and all hell could break loose. every time i successfully light a fire i always feel like it's the first time. probably a good thing given my city boy wilderness skills. haha.

Great place, thanks for those wonderful pictures! I hope one day I get the chance of spending my holidays at such a beautiful place.

Great write up and pics. I love to see folks actually getting out and using their blades, makes me jealous. I really like my Rat 3 & "need" an Izula.

Great pics. Looks like an awesome place to spend a lifetime.

What make and model is the .22?

Awesome pics, looks like a good time, and an educational one as well:thumbup:

I notice youre from Coquitlam, me too! Keep an eye on the Canadian forums, we have meetups every once in a while, usually up in north van somewhere, they're pretty fun.

Love the pics or place and use of the knives. Makes me want to head back to BWCA right now....love it up there!

Great photos, thanks for sharing. I've only been out to Canim lake once, its a real nice spot! A friends parents own the resort there. I hope to get out there again someday.

Thanks guys!

I honestly have no clue what make or model the .22 is. I'm not much of a gun guy, and am only capable of cleaning, loading and shooting the 3 that we have lol

Dannngggg good to know that there are people in vancouver to meet with, I'll definitely keep an eye out!

Diesel, do you mean Reynolds Resort, Canim Lake Resort or Rainbow? I know the Reynolds Resort owners quite well
