A Rat in Montana

This spring, I put in for an out of state elk and deer tag in Montana with three of my friends and we had to pay a handsome sum to do so. After paying the non-refundable fee, I conceded I had to have knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus in early September. Just got off my crutches two weeks ago and am still hobbling pretty good. I elected to go with my hunting buddies (four of us total) just to take the time off and enjoy the scenery.

We rented a nice cabin in the woods, pretty high up in the snow line. When we got there, the road to the cabin was so deep in snow, we parked the trucks and I got a ride on a snowmobile up to the cabin. I didn't venture out to elk hunt for fear of undoing the surgery's results, so I hung out in the cabin, took a few photos and did a lot of reading taking in the beautiful scenery. Kept my rifle handy in case a bull decided to wander through one of the shooting lanes from the cabin (one snuck by after dark one night). I continued my physical therapy hobbling from one side of the cabin to the other looking out the windows for elk (wink).

In spite of one of my hunting partners being a native of the area, giving us a pretty good advantage with his local connections, the weather was uncooperative for most of our time there (windy and snowy). No elk or deer taken on this trip, but we have a lot of good memories. The cabin provided a nice base camp for the guys that did go hunting, we ate well, and shared a lot of stories from past hunts.

Anyway, here are some of the photos from a very memorable trip.

This is probably my favorite landscape photo from the trip.

This is the kind of weather we had for most of the trip - windy, snowy and cold (had minus 8 one day).

On Wednesday we had the only blue sky day of the trip. This one the moon and the mountains aligned for a nice shot.

I took this shot one morning as the sun was coming up.

The morning we left, the weather cleared up and I ventured out of the cabin to take this shot.

Here is the knife content for this thread. The only Wauseon product I brought with me was a favorite of mine that I was hoping to get bloody again: The Rat Hunter. SR101 drop point I bought from Eric at the 2005 Blade Show. I got a sheath from David Brown at the show. I was playing with the setting on the camera to take these shots with the knife in focus and the background out of focus.

Love how this shot came out in the snow.

The trip was successful in the fact that we all had a good time and made the 1100 mile round trip without incident. After a week of snowing in the mountains, we had to chain all four wheels up on the 4wd rigs to get them out and down the mountain.

Enjoy!

Beautiful pics man!
Sorry the hunt didnt go as planned,
but at least you had time away, with good friends
in some incredible country.

heal fast and get um next time
Thanks for the pics!

Sounds like fun despite the knee and no elk.

and that skinner looks like it would be up for the task had you gotten an elk or deer:thumbup:

You don't always have to get your game to know success.

Congratulations on a fine trip.

Stunning pics! Thank you for sharing them!

Even if the trip wasn't as planned, I'm sure you had a memorable time!

Great pics. The Rat Hunter was the one that always eluded me. Dog Skinners, Rat Skinners, Desert Jacks... whatever. No problem to find. Rat Hunter? Elusive.

Again, great pics!

Thanks guys. I told our group that a "successful" trip is one where we get to and from the hunting area without incident and we enjoyed our time, so with that as our criteria, it was very successful ;)

Couple photos of the knife close up (cropped).
