Well the other night one of my employees and I were talking about the virtues of a quality, close shave with vintage equipment. He is only 19, and has the typical light and patchy beard, he wasn't very interested in the idea, but he did have a lot of questions. I dug up some pictures on my phone to show him the equipment I use, a british super speed and some others, when he butted in and said, "Hey there's an old razor like that in the drawer at home, you want it?" I immediately perked up and said sure! After I told him to make sure it wasn't a family keepsake or anything. He agreed and today he brings me this...

That's right, a grimey, dirty Gillette Super Adjustable! It does have an issue which can be seen in the 2nd and 3rd pics that isn't allowing the silo doors to open. I believe the later bar is bent. But the adjuster works perfectly!

Does anyone have any tips for fixing this issue? Or is it something else causing it?

you my friend got a gillette black beauty, I have one. It is still my favorite since I got it (and i found it for 5.00, so heck yes)

as for repairing it, I cant tell for sure, I have a Gillete fatboy (another 5$ lol) that I think was the same way (If i am seeing the what is wrong with it correctly), mine was just jammed up with gunk, I cleaned it real well, and it worked fine. it did open though, but it didnt open easily

good luck

Yep, its the long handled black beauty, and I think a later one because it has a plastic adjuster plate. I looked at it again and the safety bar is bent in on one end. In pic two, the safety bar on the right, you can see a slight bow to it as you look down it. Also the little lever to flip open the door should sit inside the safety bar. I'm going to have to get out the jewelers tools to adjust this one without popping the plating off.

Well I managed to not gouge this razor up too badly, but a screwdriver wasn't going to fix this. Both safety bars were bent down, if you look in the second pic in the original post, you notice the saftey bars are actually pointing in towards the handle rather than parallel to it. I used jewelers pliers and a small ball pein hammer to persuade it back into shape.

Here are the after pics...
