Well, I just had an all too close run-in with a Fiddleback Spider (Brown Recluse) while I was working. I was scooping DE powder out of a bag when I felt something odd brush my hand... I looked down inside the bag and the little jerk was right there, sitting next to my hand. I scooped him out of the bag and onto the ground, I wasn't thinking and right as I smashed him I thought "damn I should have taken a picture". Glad he wasn't too angry with me as I had already had my hand in the bag many times before I saw him. Boring story without pictures, I know, just thought I would share.

After being bit by one myself, I can assure you that the experience is no picnic. Intense burning pain that grows worse over time followed by necrosis around the bite area. I'll spare you the picture of what looked like a bullet hole in my forearm. It ultimately healed up fine without needing a skin graft, so I guess that I was lucky.

I glad that it was just a close call for you.

Are you referring to diatomaceous earth?
I thought that was supposed to kill the creepy crawlies

Had your hand in there many times before you noticed??? ....... I may have just peed my pants a little bit.....

I am, and that's what I thought also. Apparently she was one bad mama jama

I just looked on my bag and it only mentions fleas and ticks but I'm almost positive everything I read before buying mentioned all sorts of outdoor pests

It's your lucky day!
I did something similar with a barrel for dog food and a widow. That was yrs ago.

Well sense you killed a fiddleback I say out with old a buy a new one the a little more friendly

Close call. Most won't bite unless you accidentally crush them. Around here, male southern house spiders look similar to the recluse, but I have not run into any of the real kind. Brown widows, on the other hand...

Well, I just purchased a BLJ off TKC zack ;)

It was a close call, and I was lucky... I work in the outdoors so I have had my fair share of close calls (rattlesnakes, angry cattle, angry whitetail, bees, wasps and yellow jackets) but spiders definitely jam me up the most.

By the grace of God I've never been bitten. My grandads place is infested with them. I only learned what they looked like and figured out about the infestation when I was an adult. Never got me onece as a boy, meddling and rooting around the whole property. I was the kid that hid under the hay bales and what not. Thank God for their shyness at least. I check my shoes and shake out towels nowadays tho.

I hear ya man. I was the same way, and to a lesser extent still am. I think one of the scariest movies when I was younger was Arachnophobia... what a classic.

I have a friend that was bitten and it left a 1/4" deep hole the size of a coke can in his calf.
We are infested with them where I work and the exterminator told me the best way to kill them is with sticky traps as they are very resistant to pesticides. He also said if you see other types of spiders you probably don't have Recluse as they tend to eliminate most other varieties.

IMO, the best way to control them is to encourage the rest of the spider population in your home rather than killing them. I kill Brown Recluse spiders when I see them. Daddy Long Legs and Wolf spiders I never kill. These spiders are larger, and eat the same bugs that the Recluse needs to survive. The Wolf Spider is your best friend in controlling the Recluse. They get quite big if you let them.

I found this guy hanging from the swingset as I was about to lie down in the hammock so I went and grabbed the camera.
