A real quandary I'm in

I think, and think doesn't mean for certain, I have gotten it settled, between two knives, what I'll give myself for Christmas. It's amazing to me how good I've been each year since getting divorced! Never got presents like I get now cause I was never a good boy.:(

It's between replacing the Boker Titan Defender, a knife I really, really do like, and an HTM Madd-Maxx 5.5. Now these are at the opposite scale as far as size is concerned with the BTD having just under a 3.5" blade, and the MM having a 5.5" blade. Would be nice to get both, but I have a Peter R. folder that he is slated to start on in Feb. so I'm saving for it.

Of course I've has the Titan Defender before, as I indicated, but it was stolen from me in the summer of 2010. I was/am really fond of this knife as it is a bulldog of a knife, and in a smaller package. The titanium liners are .100" thick, blade is around .140" thick, weight is around the 6 ounce mark ( a heavy and solid feeling smaller knife), lockup is as solid as they come with a very firm push needed to push the lockbar over to unlock, plus it leaves plenty of room for any wear that might occur, and blade steel is N690Co, a steel I really like. The pocket clip is a foldover type and is mounted for tip up carry, my preffered carry, but not quite a deep enough carry to cover the entire knife, but what does stick out is very, very little, and something I can fix. Costwise I'm looking at ~$350.

The MM would also be a replacement as I had a DLC Manual model a year and a half ago.
But this time I'm looking at the satin version with the SAO opening...assisted opening. I really do like the 5.5" blade and the S30V is fine by me. This is a very flat knife and it rides very good in the type pants I wear for work/play. The blade is a single edge dagger style, and is between .140" to .150" thick, as are the titanium handles. I carried my other one with more ease that some 3.5" to 4.0" bladed models. The framelock was absolutely solid and it took a very firm thumb push to disengage the lock, exactly the way I want it to be. It also left plenty of room for any wear that might occur. It weighs in around the 7 ounce mark. The pocket clip is mounted for tip down carry, though I prefer tip up, and is a deep pocket clip, putting the entire knife inside my pocket. Costwise I'm looking at ~$475.

Right now it is going from day to day between the Boker and HTM. One day I'm firmly decided it is the Boker, the next I'm just as firmly decided it is the HTM! Thus you see the quandary.

One thing in favor of the Boker is that I could go ahead and get a couple Boker Plus knives I've been wanting, and still not go over the price of the Madd Maxx, as I've set the top price at $500 for the knife/knives.

Not quite sure why I'm telling all this and perhaps it is just to help me see it a little better. But if anyone has comments, and/or suggestions, by all means SHARE.:)

I think you'll recall my earlier trepidations re the Litewight Defender my local pusher had. Well... to make a long story short, it never got returned to Boker for exchange/credit by the store. 'Found' in the store, it went back out for sale - and I picked it up for a c-note. It simply isn't up to the build standard of the Titan Worker or Haddock. The slightly off center blade rubs only where the blade taper meets the spine thickness and it rubs on a fg apex of the Ti liner. I've thought about easing that Ti edge - but that's to accomodate a construction fault, ie, a patch - not a fix. Also, the framelock release, unlike any other such Ti/steel framelock interfaces I have, feels like it has grit in it, despite flooding with solvents and lube. It's initial edge grind was horrid - and took some time with a Sharpmaker to make viable. By extension - if the Boker Titan Defender is anything like the lite weight, I'd pass on it! A far better knife can be found in the Benchmade and Zero Tolerance lines, using steels like Bohler m390 and ElMax. Specifically, ZT-0551 and BM 755 are great. I am not familiar with the 'M.M.', but $475 puts you in the CRK field of play... with S30V or S35VN... and they'll be perfect. Just some input, clearly worth it's cost...

Good luck!

I've got an older D2 Madd Maxx dagger. Easily in Sebenza class for fit and finish and smooth operation. We're talking Darrell Ralph here, and these are his classics.

Thanks for the info Stainz! I've had both the Titan Defender and the Lightweight Defender. The two I had were pretty much perfect, with the Titan Defender being my preferred choice between the two. Lockup, blade action, centered blade, edge out of the box, fit/finish, all of these were just top notch on both. I would definately hope that the one you had was an overlooked one that slipped by QC! The original TD is simply a heck of a knife, but I think I've said everything that could be said, so I will not bore ya'll with another go'round!! But I will say this; the write up from Boker says that the titaniuym liners are nearly 2mm thick, that would be .080". But upon measuring them with an electronic mic, they turned out to be a little over 2.5mm, or .100" in thickness. This is as thick as my Ontario Retribution 1 is!!:thumbup: When this lock locks, it's locked!

The HTM MM I've also had, but had to sale it, against my wishes, but not the ex's wishes:mad::mad::rolleyes: Had to pay the lawyer for another trip to court, where she continues to try and milk every dollar from me she can. But that's another story for a different time and place. The MM I had was a really nice knife and I love to carry large, especially when the knife lays so flat in my pocket!! It also has a very nice heft to it at 7.4 ounces, but still a fairly light knife for it's overall size. I really liked the lockup on it as it was very stiff and wasn't going to accidently unlock on me!

So now look what happened. I was pretty much decided on the Boker Titan Defender, UNTIL I started talking about the Madd Maxx:eek::eek::( Now I'm back to being quandarified again.:confused::confused:

One thing I do know though, whichever one I choose I'll be happy with in it's own way!:thumbup::)

I remember my glee over finally getting my first BM 630 Skirmish - I found a NIB one, too. Perfection! Then, a couple of years ago, I found a second one at a gun show - good grief - no box, but almost perfect - achieved perfection in minutes on a Sharpmaker. Total investment - in both - <$300! So, why did I quit carrying that great 4.3" x .160" S30V bladed Ti knife? Several knifenut friends told me that it was dog ugly! I think it's cute... I'm going to start carrying one of them again! If I had just stopped with that second Skirmish... but, no, I had to buy some more BM's... then Bokers... ZT's... CRK's...

I personally like the look of the Boker better. I'm a DR fan but I don't like that one. A 5.5 inch blade is what I want in a fixed blade, not a folder.

Just my $0.02 of course. Good luck.

Stainz, I had a couple of BM 630's, one a Limited Edition all black model, and BM used the BC-1 coating, a boron carbide coating that held up as well as the DLC coating, but came out with a nice satin finish. Course that was partially due, if not all due, to the satin finish BM put on the handle to begin with. Anyway, I loved these two! Then along came Mr. Divorce Attorney and many, MANY knives got sold, including these two.:(:( I would definately carry if I were you!

Gazz, I can agree with you on this, to a degree that is.:D The 5.5" blade on this knife will never replace a fixed blade for it's strength, and "unbrokeness";) But I love to carry big with my folders, and stout on my smaller ones, and when you match such a slim frame, deep-carry pocket clip, and a 7.4 ounce weight, well......it just fit's my style!

But I still am in a quandary, and will be until I just bite the bullet and press "Buy" on one of them. Both appeal to me in different ways, and I'm saying the same thing over and over trying to talk myself into one of them!!:confused::confused:

Who knows, I may end up having to do it BF style.

So I solved my quandary, and have a Boker Titan Defender arriving tomorrow. Of course I'm thrilled to get another one to replace the old one, but I still find myself thinking of the Madd Maxx, AND now, a Raindrop Damascus SR-1!! But I still have the month of December to work with......:D:thumbup::D
