We were recently approached to create a modern take on a pompeii gladius. This is a thinner and shorter style of gladius and as a result is quite fast in hand.
Durability and functionality were a priority and they were wanting a blade that was battle ready and tough enough for survival tasks but still had the martial intent that the original had. With this in mind the blade was given a satin finish, welded steel bolsters, custom kydex sheath and would you look at the patterning on this black and green micarta wrap? It's formed around the tang for one solid, grippy piece that can't crack, delaminate or wiggle free over time.
Some specs:
18" blade
7.5" handle
650gm
5.5m at bolster, 2.5mm before tip
POB 3" from bolster
The fuller and slight waist to the blade aren't strictly traditional but they do help the blade stand out as something truly unique. We've made a handful of sword now and each one has been an improvement over the last. The next I'm sure will be even better
Take care,
Andrew and the team at Kailash
