A couple days ago I was on a canoe and kayak trip with some friends, and with a few friends of friends. One of the friends of friends was paddling a kayak. I was in a canoe. Each person in the group made small talk with the others throughout the day, and in the ten or so minutes I spent with the friend of a friend in the kayak, he seemed like an okay guy. Later that night, I found myself sitting around a fire with the group and with the new kayak guy sitting to my left. (I should mention that the new guy looked to be in his mid twenties.)

I don't know how it came up, but one of us must of said something about knives, because this new young kayaker guy says something like, "Yeah, I'm really into traditional knives."

I take his age into consideration and wonder if "traditional knives" to him means the same as what "traditional knives" means to me. So I ask him, "What do you mean by traditional knives?"

He says, "I have a pretty decent collection of Great Eastern Cutlery and Northwoods knives." Of course, much conversation ensued throughout the night.

The former friend of a friend is now a friend. Last night I got a short text from him. He said he wanted to sell his plastic kayak, and get into a more traditional canoe. :)

Great story! I haven't yet met someone else who owns a GEC, but I will say there are a few of us "younger bucks" that prefer traditional knives to the moderns.

Ah ok, you just threw a little curve at us! I have found a couple of knife friends in a similar way to you, it is nice to know we are not alone:) You should definitely bring him here if he is not already.

Actually, there's a little more I can add to the story...

His girlfriend and my wife were sitting across the fire from us. I did not learn of their conversation until we got home. Somehow knives also came up in their talking. According to my wife, my new friend's girlfriend was making light fun of her boyfriend's knife obsession. She couldn't quite understand why anyone would have a display case of old looking knives in the house. My wife asked her if her boyfriend had ever given her a knife. He had not. My wife showed the girlfriend the Swiss Army Knife she's carried every day since college (which she purchased herself.) My wife told the girlfriend that she should get one—that her boyfriend would think it was really hot. :)

I just got a text from the new friend. It turns out he is not on bladeforums. (Maybe there's something wrong with him after all. :) )

I've thrown out an invite to him, so hopefully he'll at least stop in for a visit.

There are quite a few knife people on Facebook groups that have never even heard of BladeForums (a shame, IMO)

Love this.

I made my ladyfriend a keychain with a little flashlight, a Swiss Army classic, and a pair of ultra-thin nail clippers (not victorinox, but good quality).

She carried it 'cause I liked it (and thought it was hot), but now has used it a few times and sees the utility. She calls it her Batgirl utility belt.
