Hi all,

I just received my new Buck Nighthawk 650 and really like the knife - with one exception. I'm left-handed and would like a "lefty" sheath for my knife.

Since you guys are far more knowledgeable about Buck knives than I am, I was wondering - is there another sheath available that will fit my Nighthawk and meet my needs? I would rather not go the custom made route.

Thanks for your input!

dos50, welcome to the forum.

Very early on in my passion for Buck knives I bought a 119 at Walmarket, so you know I got it at a remarkable price, anyway, I am a lefty, so when I got it home I liked the knife a bunch but the sheath didn’t really do it for me. I wrote a snail mail letter to Chuck Buck saying how much I liked the knife and asking if I could buy a sinister (lefty) sheath for it. He wrote me back saying that he was having one made for me and he sent it to me, no charge. I’ve been hooked ever since. Classy and smart.

I can’t speak for Buck but give this a try. It worked once.

Yes, Welcome to the forum dos50!

Somewhere here in all these threads, Goose posted a pic of an aftermarket tactical looking sheath that looks like it might be ambi. He will probably be along soon. I believe that thread says where he got it.

My first 650 came yesterday and I think it will just live in the truck when out hunting. Can't see me hauling it around on a belt.

I got it on-line from LA Police Gear.
Great sheath that will fit a 650 or 119.

In the pic with the 650 and 188, it is the upper sheath.

Larry...is the 650 too big for ya? Is that why ya won't John Wayne it?

I guess I would JW it if I was out tromping in the woods, but have gotten too old for that and either the truck or a 4 wheeler is usually always handy. Actually I mainly got it from all the peer pressure here....lol....nah,,, I do like playing with the different blades, just to see if there is an unfilled nitch in all my doins that one might fill. That, and I snagged it pretty cheep....:D :D I could see strapping that LA Gear sheath to the 4wheeler for easy access when crashing through the brush. But I already have a much larger other brand that I bolted a kydex sheath on the 4wheeler that makes it real handy.

This one I just got, looks like yours in the pic. Bead blasted blade, black handle. .

Does that LA sheath have the plastic insert?

Yeah, I haven't worn that sheath/650 combo too much at all. But, like you, I have thought about strapping it somewhere handy in the vehicle...or on my Schwinn.

My John Wayne du jour is a full tang 124.

Yes, the SPEC OP sheath from LA does have a plastic insert.

Thanks guys for all your input! :) I knew that I couldn't be the first lefty to face this problem. It's good to hear advice from those who have already "been there and done that."

Welcome to the forum dos50! Now for the bad news...Chuck used to do that, send a lefty sheath out, back when we had the sheath shop in house. It was a lot more practical to do back then i guess.
I hope you have sucess with the other options mentioned.

It's cool to see a growing number of Nighthawk owners here in the forum  PR and dos, I'd love to hear your impression of the knife....

dos50: I'm a lefty too so I feel your pain ;) I wear my sheaths on my right side and reach across to draw. A little awkward at first but ok after some practice.

Although I don't ever use the 650 or any of its derivitives, I think it is one of the top knives we make. Its just about bullet proof, unless of course, you baton it through logs....
I could not resist that!!! Sorry but is IS friday and I am a little giddy about the 3 day weekend! :D

Feeling a little giddy here too..... maybe I'll go beat my 655 through some firewood :D ;)

Well, Messersmith, the one thing I like the best about the Nighthawk is the ergonomic handle. Being kind of a "sweaty palms" guy, I really wanted a knife with a large comfortable handle with a non-slip grip. (It's suprising to me how few good knives have this! ) Plus the Nighthawk destruction review by noss4 (posted in the Knife Reviews & Testing forum) demonstrated to me the overall ruggedness of the knife and that it had a blade I could count on in an emergency. (The fact that the Nighthawk doesn't cost an arm or a leg doesn't hurt either! ;) )

Off on a tangent ........ I wonder what percentage of knife buyers like us are left handed? Up to 15% of the overall population is left-handed and left handedness is bestowed upon more men than women (according to Wikipedia anyway). Maybe we all (as a deserving minority ;) ) should ask for more representation from the knife manufacturers in regards to their knife sheaths?? :D

I couldn't agree more but I'm not going to hold my breath :D

I need a left handed sheath for a 650. I tear up everything I own, so I will need a sheath that is very rugged. I want it to stay firmly attached to my body. I want to run, jump, dive, or whatever and not have flop. Any ideas? I read the previous posts to this thread, but can't find the actual name of the sheath Buckaholic was talking about and none of the pics are on the thread anymore. I appreciate any help :) Thank you in advance.
