A riddle of steel for the SOG sages.

I've carried a Mini Autoclip at my side since 1995. I use it daily. After the first year of use, I liked it so well I bought a back up. (before they quit making them) I have not yet had a failure requiring that back up knife. It is still awaiting it's call to duty.

They brought back the model at way less cost than the original. They left off the adjustable pocket clip that I love, added a thumb stud to catch on your pocket, and it appears they have gone to a softer 420 blade steel.

So my question is...
Does anyone here know what steel was used in the first versions of Mini Autoclips ?
I know the one I'm using is holding a way better edge than 420SS.

Thanks

any idea what exact model number you have ?? Chris@SOG might be able to track it down in the SOG history books.

I personally don't know much at all about SOG folders, but with a model number it might be easier to Google some info.

Cheers,

Carl

I am sorry for the lack of model number. I just don't know it.
Maybe a couple of pictures would help someone more knowledgeable than me.

No model number is stamped on the blade.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I've processed an entire deer from the hoof to packaging and never had to touch up the blade.
I'd like to know how this stacks up to some of the wonder steels they are selling.

Thanks again,
Ron

IIRC from when I got my Outdoor Mini Autoclip it's AUS6 though it could have been AUS8. The X-42's have BG42 steel. Got one of them also.

The AutoClips in 1995 were made using 440A Stainless Steel. Handles were made of Zytel, glass reinforced. Nice pics you have there!

We don't have much information on folding knives yet, but it's in the works! :D

Did you ever solve your problem? I'm a fan of these, too. I, regretfully, sold several during bad times and I'm trying to gather a few again. Even though the steel they use doesn't seem great, knowing what it is, I think the deal with these was SOG's excellent heat treat. Because I've always thought it was better steel than it actually is. I guess it's the way SOG treats.
