It was a nice day here today and I took a ride.

About 3 ft long , 7 or 8 darn near perfect rattles. Is it true you can tell age by the number of rattles?

Anyone know what kind of shroom this is? My blade is about 6" long.

We need rain , very dusty and dry here. These were both taken near Medix Run Central Pa.

Nice snake. I had to kill one about that size this last weekend, and it got me wondering about the age/rattles thing, too. According to a Forest Service PDF (http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/forests/allegheny/wildlife/ANF-TimberRattlesnakes.pdf), you can't tell a snakes age by it's rattles, since they are replaced every time the snake sheds it's skin.

I felt bad killing the rattler, but it was headed down my driveway towards the open garage and a houseful of relatives and kids. I can't have that kind of risk around.

Here's a shot of the little fella:

did you keep the skin or meat? I got one couple years ago and a friend took the meat. he likes to eat them. I kept the skin and tanned it. Turned out nice but lost somehow when I moved. I wouldnt kill them in the woods but certainly would if near my home as you said.

I'm a vegetarian, so I didn't want the meat. Once I chopped through it three times, the skin wasn't very attractive. Not sure if I could stomach skinning one, either.

I've seen a lot of rattlers out hiking and mountain biking, and just left them alone. They serve a purpose, and are interesting to watch when they're not near my house.

they have rattlers in central Pa??

Eastern Diamondback, or a Timber?

Nice snake.

Judging by the lack of a diamond shaped pattern on its back, I will say it's not an Eastern.;)

Plus, I am not sure if Eastern Diamond backs are found in PA, I know Timer rattlesnakes are...

Edit, Judging by Wikepedia, Eastern's are not in PA

"Geographic range
Found in the southeastern United States from southeastern North Carolina, south along the coastal plain through peninsular Florida to the Florida Keys, and west along the Gulf Coast though southern Mississippi to southeastern Louisiana. The original description for the species does not include a type locality, although Schmidt (1953) proposed that it be restricted to "Charleston, South Carolina" (USA).[1]"

pattern looks a bit diamond to me, however now I know its a Timber.... Knew it was one or the other.
